Bettencourt, R-Salem, is also expected to ask for resignations from three assistant majority whips who also opposed O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s desire to override Lynch&#8217;s veto of the anti-union bill, HB 474.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>They are Nashua Rep. Michael McCarthy, Whitefield Rep. John Tholl Jr. and Kingston Rep. David Welch.<\/p>\n<p>None of these changes have been publicly announced.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_3740\"  class=\"wp-caption module image left\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"One of O'Brien's high priorities since becoming Speaker has been instituting a Right-To-Work law in New Hampshire\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/12\/5622797580_2f84bb17ba.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3740\" title=\"William O'Brien in Concord\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/12\/5622797580_2f84bb17ba-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/12\/5622797580_2f84bb17ba-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/12\/5622797580_2f84bb17ba-220x146.jpg 220w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/12\/5622797580_2f84bb17ba.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\"> <\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of O&#39;Brien&#39;s high priorities since becoming Speaker has been instituting a Right-To-Work law in New Hampshire<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And they weren&#8217;t the only Republicans who didn&#8217;t go along with the veto override vote.\u00a0 NHPR&#8217;s Dan Gorenstein <a title=\"Right-to-Work Defeated \" href=\"http:\/\/nhpr.org\/post\/right-work-defeated\" target=\"_blank\">reports that 41 Republicans joined Democrats in voting down the measure<\/a>.\u00a0 The vote was 240-139 in favor of overriding the veto.\u00a0 If just seven Republicans hadn&#8217;t split from the party line, New Hampshire would have joined the ranks of <a title=\"National Right to Work\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nrtw.org\/rtws.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Right-to-Work states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And, Gorenstein reports, O&#8217;Brien worked hard to try to rustle up those final votes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;House leaders spent months trying to get Republicans in line.<\/p>\n<p>They even tried to sway lawmakers like Republican Susan Emerson- who\u2019s had very public run-ins with O\u2019Brien.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Oh, my god. I was told I would be put back on Health and Human Service, the committee I was kicked off, if I changed my vote. I was told that I would be redistrict if I didn\u2019t change my vote on Right-to-Work.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Emerson shrugs, and says if more conservative Republicans go after her in the primary, so be it.<\/p>\n<p>She knows this issue isn\u2019t going away, and she\u2019s bracing herself.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the language of Right-to-Work laws can vary from state to state, the gist is that, in most job sectors, an employee can&#8217;t be required to join a union or pay union dues.\u00a0 So far, 22 states have passed Right-to-Work laws.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While overriding Governor Lynch&#8217;s veto of Right-to-Work failed yesterday, Kevin Landrigan of TheLobbyNH.com reports the fallout continues today: &#8220;Four members of House Speaker William O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s extended leadership team will be sacked for their opposition to Right-to-Work legislation, TheLobbyNh.com has learned.
