And according to one report, that&#39;s very, very good for the second home economy.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you tuned-in to NHPR&#8217;s &#8220;<a title=\"StateImpact Talks NH\u2019s Seasonal Home Economy On \u201cThe Exchange\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2011\/11\/21\/stateimpact-talks-nhs-seasonal-home-economy-on-the-exchange\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Exchange<\/a>&#8221; yesterday morning, you might have heard economist Russ Thibeault talking about an interesting (and these days, somewhat obscure) report.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll get to that in a minute.\u00a0 But first, a bit of background.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s program was based on StateImpact&#8217;s reporting, which focused on the economic impact of New Hampshire&#8217;s <a title=\"New Hampshire: A First Choice For Second Homeowners\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/tag\/vacation-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\">vacation homes<\/a>.\u00a0 And as we&#8217;ve noted in previous coverage, that&#8217;s a nebulous number to track down.\u00a0 For one thing, the <a title=\"New Hampshire Division of Travel and Tourism\" href=\"http:\/\/www.visitnh.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Division of Travel and Tourism<\/a> doesn&#8217;t keep track of second homeowners.\u00a0 Meanwhile, although you can get a decent count of seasonal homes based on <a title=\"US Census Bureau\" href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Census<\/a> data, it&#8217;s harder to tell how many of those homes have been converted to full-time residences, and vice-versa.\u00a0 And, as noted at <a title=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2011\/11\/18\/liveblog-new-england-economic-forecast-for-2012-and-beyond\/\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2011\/11\/18\/liveblog-new-england-economic-forecast-for-2012-and-beyond\/\" target=\"_blank\">last week&#8217;s New England Economic Forecast conference<\/a>, it&#8217;s hard to pin-down solid retail data, because New Hampshire doesn&#8217;t have a sales tax.\u00a0 New Hampshire businesses aren&#8217;t reporting their sales in the same, detailed way that retailers are in most other states.\u00a0 So it&#8217;s tough to look at towns with high concentrations of vacation homes and drill down to how much money those homeowners are pumping into the local economy.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The economists we spoke with over the summer by and large said they didn&#8217;t know of any studies done on the economic impact of vacation homes in the state.\u00a0 They agreed it could be done, but it&#8217;d be tough.\u00a0 And we found the same thing.\u00a0 But economist Russ Thibeault did manage to track down an old report focused on vacation homes vis-a-vis the preservation of the state&#8217;s open spaces.*\u00a0 And he was kind enough to give this paper to StateImpact following &#8220;The Exchange.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what Thibeault found:\u00a0 In 1999, the <a title=\"Society For The Protection Of New Hampshire Forests\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forestsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests<\/a> released a study called &#8220;<a title=\"The Economic Impact of Open Space in New Hampshire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spnhf.org\/pdf\/economic_impact.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">The Economic Impact of Open Space in New Hampshire<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 Using data from 1996-97, researchers found the following information about the state&#8217;s second home economy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attributed Direct Income: $478,783,000<\/li>\n<li>Attributed Indirect Income: $478,783,000 (Yes, they are listed as the same number in the report.)<\/li>\n<li>Attributed State and Local Tax Revenues: $285,855,786<\/li>\n<li>Attributed Direct and Indirect Jobs: 15,029<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, all of these numbers would have almost certainly changed since 1997.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s still interesting that someone did, in fact, do a study.\u00a0 And these figures provide a nice starting point for thinking about how important second homes are&#8211;and have historically been&#8211;to the New Hampshire economy.<\/p>\n<p>*<em>Researchers defined &#8220;open spaces&#8221; as, &#8220;areas that are not built-up, excavated, or developed.\u00a0 Wild areas, forests, tree farms, open productive agricultural land, grassland, pasture, wetlands, lakes, natural seashores, and non-built up parts of state and municipal parks are all included.\u00a0 Open space does not need to be completely natural or pristine to be included under this definition.\u00a0 At present, approximately 89% of New Hampshire can be classified as open space.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you tuned-in to NHPR&#8217;s &#8220;The Exchange&#8221; yesterday morning, you might have heard economist Russ Thibeault talking about an interesting (and these days, somewhat obscure) report.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll get to that in a minute.\u00a0 But first, a bit of background.
