outs\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/11\/109777338-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/11\/109777338-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/11\/109777338-620x423.jpg 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/11\/109777338-220x150.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Mark Ralston \/ AFP\/Getty Images<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">All over the country, college students face increasing education costs.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Student debt has been a popular topic lately.\u00a0 The big figure currently bandied about is that <a title=\" Occupy Wall Street: Student-Loan Debt Among Top Concerns \" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2011\/10\/12\/occupy-wall-street-student-loan-debt_n_1007889.html\" target=\"_blank\">American students and alumni are carrying a <em>trillion<\/em> dollars of debt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But that figure, $1,000,000,000,000, it feels so&#8230;abstract.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never even seen a million dollars, let alone a billion or a <em>trillion.\u00a0 <\/em>What can a trillion dollars buy?<\/p>\n<p>It would buy 4,208,754 <a title=\"edmunds.com \" href=\"http:\/\/www.edmunds.com\/lamborghini\/gallardo\/2011\/?sub=coupe\" target=\"_blank\">Lamborghini Gallardo Coupes at $237,600<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Or, for the less-than-ultra-wealthy-set, it would also buy 63,271,116 <a title=\"Options and Pricing\" href=\"http:\/\/automobiles.honda.com\/civic-sedan\/price.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Honda Civics<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Of course, <a title=\"What $1.2 Trillion Can Buy \" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/01\/17\/business\/17leonhardt.html\" target=\"_blank\">a more publicized measure of this figure<\/a> is that about $1 trillion has also funded 8 years of war in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s only natural that media outlets would be drawn to a number of this magnitude.\u00a0 What&#8217;s interesting, however, is how various state and national news organizations are covering this issue.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with New Hampshire.\u00a0 <a title=\"NH students rise to top of national debt list\" href=\"http:\/\/unionleader.com\/article\/20111108\/NEWS04\/711089979\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s the big news reported Ted Siefer at the <em>Union-Leader<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A new report says college students in New Hampshire graduated with more loan debt last year than anywhere else in the country.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"related-content alignleft\"><h4 class=\"related-header\">Related<\/h4><div class=\"links\"><h5>Posts<\/h5><ul><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2011\/10\/19\/new-hampshire-ranks-46th-in-nation-for-student-loan-defaults\/\">New Hampshire Ranks 46th In Nation For Student Loan Defaults<\/a><\/li><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2011\/08\/01\/online-universities-dark-horse-to-win-higher-ed-race\/\">Online Universities Dark Horse To Win Higher Ed\u00a0Race?<\/a><\/li><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2011\/08\/02\/how-the-debt-ceiling-deal-could-affect-higher-higher-ed-and-the-job-market\/\">How The Debt Ceiling Deal Could Affect Higher Ed And The Job Market<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"topics\"><h5>Topics<\/h5><p class=\"topic\"><img class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/07\/4373962579_ae5dac401e1-60x60.jpg\" height=\"60\" width=\"60\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/topic\/banking\/\">Less Bank For Your Buck: The Financial Industry<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/div>The report comes as students face further tuition hikes and reductions in financial aid due to budget cuts enacted this year \u2014 and it&#8217;s fanning the political debate over higher education funding in the Granite State.<\/p>\n<p>New Hampshire college and university graduates in 2010 had on average $31,048 in debt, the most in the country, according to the study by the Project on Student Debt. New Hampshire also has the second-greatest proportion of students with debt, 74 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The national average for student debt was $25,250, according to the report, \u201cStudent Debt and the Class of 2010,\u201d which is released on a yearly basis and is meant to call attention to escalating burden of college costs.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Siefer then goes on:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The University of New Hampshire, the state&#8217;s largest, is among the institutions with the highest debt load, according to the report, with students at the Durham campus graduating in 2010 with an average of $32,320 in debt and 76 percent of students relying on loans.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, more expensive and prestigious schools had lower debt loads, thanks to large endowments and scholarship availability, as well as greater parental resources. Twenty-two percent of students from families with annual household incomes above $100,000 attended public, two-year schools in the 2010-2011 academic year, up from 12% the previous year, according to a report from student-loan company Sallie Mae.<\/p>\n<p>Such choices meant families across all income brackets spent 9% less\u2014an average of $21,889 in cash, loans, scholarships and other methods\u2014on college in 2010-11 than in the previous year, according to the report. High-income families cut their college spending by 18%, to $25,760. The report, which is released annually, was based on a survey of about 1,600 students and parents.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And, because I&#8217;m all about facts and figures, here&#8217;s some more information from Korn&#8217;s piece:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;But a degree from a private college also is expensive and piles on debt. The average debt load for students who took out loans hit a record $27,200 for the class that graduated this year, says Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of student-aid websites Fastweb.com and FinAid.org.
