{"id":2883,"date":"2011-11-01T12:16:30","date_gmt":"2011-11-01T16:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/?p=2883"},"modified":"2011-11-01T12:17:03","modified_gmt":"2011-11-01T16:17:03","slug":"over-past-decade-laconia-saw-spike-in-vacation-home-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2011\/11\/01\/over-past-decade-laconia-saw-spike-in-vacation-home-construction\/","title":{"rendered":"Laconia Sees Boom In Vacation Home Market"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2888\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Weirs Beach is a main attraction in Laconia\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/11\/2830718159_2408ceb6e5.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2888\" title=\"Sign For Weirs Beach, Laconia, NH\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/11\/2830718159_2408ceb6e5-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/11\/2830718159_2408ceb6e5-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/11\/2830718159_2408ceb6e5-220x146.jpg 220w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/11\/2830718159_2408ceb6e5.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">NNECAPA \/ Flickr<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Weirs Beach is a main attraction in Laconia, which has seen a bit of a boom in its second home market.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here at StateImpact, we&#8217;re interested in how second homes contribute to New Hampshire&#8217;s economy.\u00a0 With ten percent of the state&#8217;s housing stock made up of <a title=\"New Hampshire: A First Choice For Second Homeowners\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/tag\/vacation-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\">vacation homes<\/a>, only two other states have a higher proportion secondary homes&#8211;Maine and Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a series last summer on how the vacation home economy works in the state, we used data from the <a title=\"United States Census 2010\" href=\"http:\/\/2010.census.gov\/2010census\/\" target=\"_blank\">US Census<\/a> to create an interactive map that shows, town by town, where these homes are concentrated.\u00a0 (You can check it out <a title=\"Vacation Homes in New Hampshire: The Who, The What and The Where\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/maps\/new-hampshire%E2%80%99s-vacation-homes-who-owns-them-where-are-they-and-how-many-are-there\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>In that same post, we noted that New Hampshire saw a net increase in vacation homes of 13.3 percent, or 7,497 units statewide, since 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as Michael Kitch reports for <em>The Laconia Daily Sun<\/em>, <a title=\"2\/3 of homes built here in 00s were seasonal\" href=\"http:\/\/www2.laconiadailysun.com\/story\/changes-housing-stock-2000-2010\" target=\"_blank\">Laconia saw a much more dramatic increase over the past decade<\/a>:<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;According to the United States Census, seasonal homes accounted for\u00a0 nearly two-thirds of the increase in the housing stock here during the past decade and now represent almost one of every four dwelling units in the city.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While Kitch notes the permanent population of Laconia dropped by 2.8 percent:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;During the decade, the number of seasonal homes rose 55-percent&#8230;to 2,293 in 2010&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the number of owner-occupied homes rose by just 41 units, or one-percent&#8230;to 3,860 in 2010 while the number of occupied rental units grew by 73, or 2.5-percent&#8230;to 2,978&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As we found last summer, there are many New Hampshire communities that have a much denser stock of second homes.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s nonetheless interesting that Laconia has seen its stock of vacation homes rise faster than primary residences, while its permanent population has declined.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here at StateImpact, we&#8217;re interested in how second homes contribute to New Hampshire&#8217;s economy.\u00a0 With ten percent of the state&#8217;s housing stock made up of vacation homes, only two other states have a higher proportion secondary homes&#8211;Maine and Vermont.
