Commission<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The New Hampshire Lottery has struggled with declining revenues over the past few years.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As we reported yesterday, New Hampshire&#8217;s lottery revenues have been steadily declining over the past five fiscal years.\u00a0 Since the lotto funds the state&#8217;s education system, lower sales translate into less money for schools.\u00a0 href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2011\/10\/24\/what-the-new-hampshire-lottery-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Still, the lottery isn&#8217;t exactly generating chump change.\u00a0 In FY 2011, the education system raked in $62.2 million.\u00a0 It&#8217;s big money.\u00a0 Just not as big as it could be.<\/p>\n<p>So we wanted to know, what&#8217;s driving lotto sales?<\/p>\n<p>(If you&#8217;ve ever worked at a gas station, grocery store, or other lottery retailer, you probably already know the answer&#8230;)<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Using data provided by the <a title=\"New Hampshire Lottery Commission\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nhlottery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Hampshire Lottery Commission<\/a>, we created the chart below:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2733\" continue to make up, the overwhelming majority of lottery sales.\u00a0 Although they&#8217;ve declined since FY 2006-2007, scratch ticket sales haven&#8217;t fallen to FY 2002 levels.<\/p>\n<p>According to the New Hampshire Lottery Commission&#8217;s <a title=\"Comprehensive Annual Financial Report For The Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 2010\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nhlottery.com\/pv_obj_cache\/pv_obj_id_79D7D6249CA247B992552CB981D41C52D0E02300\/filename\/CAFR.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2010 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report<\/a>, Powerball sales tend to be an unreliable source of revenue.\u00a0 That&#8217;s because they rise dramatically when the jackpot gets up into the hundreds of millions of dollars&#8230;and then fall back to earth once someone wins and the jackpot is back down in the tens-of-millions range.\u00a0 Interestingly, after years of flat sales, Tri-State games between New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, have begun
