choice from another employee&#8217;s candy drawer.\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl>\n\t\t\t<br style='clear: both' \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Dyn is an internet infrastructure company in Manchester with a workforce of 190 people. The company spends about $18,000 per year, per employee on benefits, from health insurance to free gym memberships, unlimited time off, an indoor climbing wall, and now \u2013 an at-cost farm-to-table cafe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s in it for Dyn?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dyn has an expanding list of clients like Netflix, Etsy and Pandora<strong>, <\/strong>and requires an ever-increasing workforce of software engineers, tech-savvy salespeople and more.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, New Hampshire\u2019s workforce is aging and shrinking. Young people have always left the state for college or job opportunities, often heading to Massachusetts, New York, and the south Atlantic states. For the first time, the in-migration of 30 and 40-somethings is slowing.\u00a0 While New Hampshire saw a net in-migration of 10,681 people in 2001, the state experienced a net out-migration of 2,329 individuals in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>In order to compete for some of the country\u2019s most sought-after skills in a place that isn\u2019t Boston, Silicon Valley, or New York, Dyn has had to get creative about recruiting and retaining talent.<\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-12724-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/12\/nht120512ec.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/12\/nht120512ec.mp3\">https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/12\/nht120512ec.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><strong>More about that cafe<!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new cafe is run by Kevin Donahue, an internationally trained chef who Dyn snatched from Manchester\u2019s popular restaurant, XO on Elm.\u00a0 Donahue hand picks each ingredient from local farmers. He says his favorite local farmer is Richard Uncles, who grows only peppers. \u201cHe does such a variety of peppers, it\u2019s amazing,\u201d says Donahue, who also buys from Larry Pletcher in Warner, The North Country Smokehouse in Claremont, and Pete And Gerry\u2019s eggs in Monroe.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s COO, Gray Chynoweth, is the guy behind the idea<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Authenticity is \u201csticky\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the tech community, people [who] work in New York, California, they work in these really fun, cool cafes,\u201d Chynoweth says \u2013 something harder to come by in Manchester, New Hampshire. Yet, he says, trying to make the city of about 100,000 into the Silicon Valley \u2013 or even Boston \u2013 would be a mistake.\u00a0 \u201cI think that&#8217;s what young people are looking for, is authenticity,\u201d Chynoweth says. \u201cThose kinds of things are really critical to making people feel like they are part of a community &#8212; a sticky, attractive place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why, Chynoweth says, the cafe focuses on what Manchester does best. He says he wanted to tap into those \u201cauthentic New Hampshire experiences &#8212; New Hampshire maple syrup, pastries that were made just a few blocks away, connecting with the farmers who grow the vegetables we\u2019re going to eat with our salads.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s those things, he says, that make people feel like they are part of a community. \u00a0Community is something Chynoweth says he\u2019s trying to nurture not only at Dyn, but in Manchester in general.<\/p>\n<p>Chynoweth hopes the Dyn Cafe will become just one of many hip, farm-to-table outfits in Manchester.\u00a0 He says that\u2019d be good for Manchester\u2019s economy, cool for the community, and would help attract young workers, too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four dollars.
