{"id":12506,"date":"2012-11-08T15:21:22","date_gmt":"2012-11-08T20:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/?p=12506"},"modified":"2013-06-28T15:27:43","modified_gmt":"2013-06-28T19:27:43","slug":"advocates-of-failed-income-tax-amendment-say-their-goals-were-acheived","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2012\/11\/08\/advocates-of-failed-income-tax-amendment-say-their-goals-were-acheived\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocates Of Failed Income Tax Amendment Say Their Goals Were Achieved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ballot Question One \u2013 a constitutional ban on the income tax &#8212; did not receive the 67 percent of votes it needed to become law on Tuesday.\u00a0 It did, however, receive 57 percent of the vote: a healthy majority.<\/p>\n<p>During an otherwise Democratic sweep on Tuesday, this GOP initiative received more votes in New Hampshire than either Ovide Lamontagne \u2013 or even Mitt Romney.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Kevin Smith chaired a PAC that advocated for the amendment. He says the measure\u2019s failure isn\u2019t really a failure.\u00a0 It\u2019s a big achievement. \u00a0\u201cI think [this] sends a loud and clear message to future governors and future legislatures,\u201d Smith says, \u201cthat the people of NH are not keen at all about having an income tax.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith says the measure was always unlikely to pass, and advocated voters support it to show their legislators that they will not support an income tax.<\/p>\n<p>Brad Cook, a Manchester Lawyer, is pleased the measure didn\u2019t pass.\u00a0 A vocal opponent of the amendment, Cook says the result shows \u201cthe wisdom of the framers of the constitution,\u201d who intentionally made it really hard to pass amendments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ballot Question One \u2013 a constitutional ban on the income tax &#8212; did not receive the 67 percent of votes it needed to become law on Tuesday.\u00a0 It did, however, receive 57 percent of the vote: a healthy majority.
