Two Mondays in a row, eager newsmakers have been gearing up to pounce on a Supreme Court decision only to find it won\u2019t be announced&#8230; just yet. With a complicated piece of legislation facing a confusing series of legal challenges, trying to understand the situation can lead to some serious eye crossing.<\/p>\n<p>I used two charts describing the possible outcomes of the Supreme Court ruling on Thursday \u2014 one is from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/up-front\/posts\/2012\/06\/18-scotus-aca-aaron\" target=\"_blank\">Brookings Institute<\/a>, another from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kaiserhealthnews.org\/Stories\/2011\/November\/18\/supreme-court-health-law-chart-2012.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Kaiser Health News<\/a> \u2014 to make my own, slightly less confusing, chart:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/06\/ACAflow2.gif\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10030\" title=\"ACAflow2\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/06\/ACAflow2-620x515.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/06\/ACAflow2-620x515.gif 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/06\/ACAflow2-300x249.gif 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/06\/ACAflow2.gif 1493w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->There are a lot of great resources out there if you want to know more. This would create radical changes, since \u201cmedicaid is the workhourse of the nation\u2019s health system, covering 30 percent of all children, 70 percent of nursing home residents and 40 percent of all deliveries,\u201d reports Phil Galewitz.<\/p>\n<p>If upheld, many more people would become eligible for Medicaid. The federal government would assume much of the additional costs initially, slowly transferring 10 percent of that burden to states by 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/rundown\/2012\/06\/whats-at-stake-for-seniors-as-supreme-court-weighs-health-reform.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>What&#8217;s at Stake for Seniors:<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If struck down, \u201c49 million Medicare beneficiaries could lose a variety of benefits that have already kicked in,\u201d writes Marilyn Werber Serafini. These include prescription savings, preventative services, and wellness visits. However, if only the individual mandate is struck down, \u201cnearly all of the health law\u2019s Medicare changes will remain intact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/rundown\/2012\/06\/whats-at-stake-for-women-as-supreme-court-weighs-health-reform.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>What&#8217;s at Stake for Women:<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven excluding maternity coverage, the National Women&#8217;s Law Center found that nearly one-third of the most commonly sold insurance plans charged women aged 25 to 40 at least 30 percent more than men for the same coverage,\u201d writes Julie Appleby. The ACA would bar insurers from charging women higher premiums than men. Other provisions include requirements regarding maternity coverage, and removing copays for mammograms and contraceptives.<\/p>\n<p>PBS and Kaiser Health have also written <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/rundown\/2012\/06\/as-supreme-court-considers-health-reform-stakes-are-high-for-consumers-insurers.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>What\u2019s at Stake for Patients<\/em><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/rundown\/2012\/06\/a-consumers-guide-to-the-health-care-reform-law.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>A Consumer\u2019s Guide to the Health Care Reform Law<\/em><\/a>.
