LaHood visits the Port of Lewiston Wednesday.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will be in Idaho Wednesday,<del><\/del> days after the Obama administration announced plans to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/politics\/166558626.html?refer=y\" target=\"_blank\">send unspent transportation dollars<\/a> to states.<\/p>\n<p>As <em>The Associated Press<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/politics\/166558626.html?refer=y\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> Friday, $470 million will be made available to states for infrastructure projects as long as states &#8220;promise to use the money to create jobs and improve transportation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The AP reports it&#8217;s an effort by the Obama administration to sidestep Congress.<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The money initially was allocated to the Transportation Department for special projects known as earmarks from 2003 to 2006. The Republican-controlled House has since banned earmarks, which are provisions tucked into spending bills for lawmakers&#8217; pet projects.&#8221; &#8211; AP<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, some of the money allocated from 2003 to 2006 was never distributed to states. Idaho now will receive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/pressroom\/redisfy0306states.htm\" target=\"_blank\">$2.7 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Jeff Stratten at the Idaho Transportation Department, the two projects initially &#8216;earmarked&#8217; by Congress were in Pocatello and Twin Falls.<\/p>\n<p>The Department has until October 1 to decide how to reallocate the $2.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Secretary Ray LaHood will visit Boise-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motivepower-wabtec.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MotivePower<\/a> with Mayor Dave Bieter.\u00a0 LaHood will also make a stop in Lewiston to present a federal TIGER award to the Port of Lewiston.\u00a0 He&#8217;ll be joined by Gov. C.L. &#8220;Butch&#8221; Otter.<\/p>\n<p>The TIGER award is a separate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dot.gov\/tiger\/fy2012tiger.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">$1.3 million grant<\/a> to help the Port of Lewiston expand its capacity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will be in Idaho Wednesday, days after the Obama administration announced plans to send unspent transportation dollars to states.
