{"id":9805,"date":"2012-08-10T16:43:24","date_gmt":"2012-08-10T22:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=9805"},"modified":"2012-08-11T10:46:12","modified_gmt":"2012-08-11T16:46:12","slug":"idahos-irrigated-farmers-are-positioned-to-cash-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/08\/10\/idahos-irrigated-farmers-are-positioned-to-cash-in\/","title":{"rendered":"Idaho&#8217;s Irrigated Farmers Are Positioned To Cash In"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_9812\"  class=\"wp-caption module image center\" style=\"max-width: 620px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"While farmers across the U.S. are suffering through the worst drought in decades, Idaho farmer Jim Tiede's irrigated wheat field promises a bumper crop.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/08\/Tiede-wheat-crop.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9812\" title=\"Tiede wheat crop\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/08\/Tiede-wheat-crop-620x465.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/08\/Tiede-wheat-crop-620x465.jpg 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/08\/Tiede-wheat-crop-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Molly Messick \/ StateImpact Idaho<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">While farmers across the U.S. are suffering through the worst drought in decades, Idaho farmer Jim Tiede&#39;s irrigated wheat field promises a bumper crop.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Today brought new information about the unrelenting <a href=\"http:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">drought<\/a> that&#8217;s affecting a broad swath of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nass.usda.gov\/Newsroom\/2012\/08_10_2012.asp\" target=\"_blank\">revised down its estimate of domestic corn production<\/a> to its lowest level in close to 20 years.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/11\/business\/projections-for-corn-yield-falls-to-17-year-low.html?hp\" target=\"_blank\">Global food prices are predicted to rise<\/a> as a result, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2012-08-10\/corn-falls-from-record-as-usda-sees-high-prices-eroding-demand.html\" target=\"_blank\">corn futures actually fell today<\/a>, as analysts predicted high prices would hurt demand.<\/p>\n<p>Here in Idaho, the drought has been less pronounced than it has been in many parts of the U.S.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">national drought monitor<\/a> says conditions across the southern part of the state are &#8220;abnormally dry&#8221; or experiencing &#8220;moderate drought.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>What does that mean for agriculture in southern Idaho&#8217;s high desert?\u00a0 It has different effects.\u00a0 Ranchers, for example, are running out of forage for their cattle.\u00a0 That means they will need to rely more on hay, but hay crops aren&#8217;t good either, and prices are up.\u00a0 In other parts of the country, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5iK2Nlo-ZQmRf5czJmeynS4BVgwBw?docId=42600b5d0482484ea8229e956c659b13\" target=\"_blank\">this had led ranchers to start selling off their herds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dry-land farmers &#8212; those who have no irrigation &#8212; are also suffering.\u00a0 Wheat planted last fall appears to have pulled through, but some farmers are experiencing near total losses on spring wheat crops.<\/p>\n<p>Irrigated farmers, though: they look positioned to cash in.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agri.idaho.gov\/Categories\/Marketing\/Documents\/Final%20English%202010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Many more Idaho acres are dedicated to wheat than corn<\/a>, but wheat prices tend to follow corn prices, meaning they&#8217;re up.\u00a0 And on Idaho&#8217;s irrigated farms, crops appear to be doing well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wish we had a lot more $8 grain years,&#8221; Power County farmer Jim Tiede told me recently, chuckling.\u00a0 &#8220;I&#8217;ve sold a lot of wheat in my life, and most of it&#8217;s been under $5.&#8221;\u00a0 With sugar beet prices also trending upward, Tiede hopes for a very good year.<\/p>\n<p>To hear <em>StateImpact<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/08\/11\/158586947\/some-idaho-farmers-pray-others-turn-on-the-water\" target=\"_blank\">story<\/a> about dry-land and irrigated farms coping with the drought, tune in to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/programs\/weekend-edition-saturday\/\" target=\"_blank\">NPR&#8217;s <em>Weekend Edition<\/em><\/a> tomorrow morning!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today brought new information about the unrelenting drought that&#8217;s affecting a broad swath of the country.
