{"id":8688,"date":"2012-06-28T12:10:40","date_gmt":"2012-06-28T18:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=8688"},"modified":"2012-06-28T12:10:40","modified_gmt":"2012-06-28T18:10:40","slug":"a-boise-anti-fraud-company-watches-business-grow-350-percent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/06\/28\/a-boise-anti-fraud-company-watches-business-grow-350-percent\/","title":{"rendered":"A Boise Anti-Fraud Company Watches Business Grow 350 Percent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boise-based anti-fraud company Kount has watched its business grow by more than 350 percent in the last year.\u00a0 That&#8217;s according to <a href=\"http:\/\/idahobusinessreview.com\/2012\/06\/26\/anti-fraud-company-sees-exponential-growth-in-boise\/\" target=\"_blank\">an article<\/a> from the <em>Idaho Business Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Fraud, especially credit card fraud, is nothing new in the marketplace, but it has only been a recent development that third-party companies focused specifically on Internet transactions have shown the potential to become behemoths in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>While the technology has gotten far more complex, the dynamic is still simple, said Don Bush, marketing director for Kount.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat fraudsters try and do is mask who they are, they don\u2019t want anybody to know who they are,\u201d he said. \u201cOur technology basically takes that mask off.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The company has patented several technologies, such as a way to \u201cfingerprint\u201d which devices \u2014 smartphones, laptops or other electronic devices \u2014 a customer is using and track them for fraud use, to create several layers of fraud detection tools that can finger the bad guys, Bush said.&#8221; &#8211; Idaho Business Review<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em>Business Review<\/em> reports there are fewer than a dozen companies like Kount, all of which are growing rapidly.\u00a0 It says that growth is due largely to need.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In 2011, there were $3.4 billion in losses in the United States and Canada resulting from online fraud perpetrated on merchants, according to statistics kept by the Merchant\u2019s Risk Council.
