{"id":8412,"date":"2012-06-20T16:29:25","date_gmt":"2012-06-20T22:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=8412"},"modified":"2012-06-20T16:29:25","modified_gmt":"2012-06-20T22:29:25","slug":"why-investment-smoothing-makes-idahos-pension-system-look-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/06\/20\/why-investment-smoothing-makes-idahos-pension-system-look-good\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Investment Smoothing Makes Idaho&#8217;s Pension System Look Good"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_8333\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Click the map to enlarge\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/06\/Pew-Pension-Map-e1340131869750.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8333\" title=\"Pew Pension Map\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/06\/Pew-Pension-Map-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Pew Center on the States<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click the map to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Idaho&#8217;s public employee pension system gap continues to shrink.<\/p>\n<p>As we <a title=\"Report: Idaho\u2019s Pension System Fares Better Than\u00a0Most\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/06\/19\/report-idahos-pension-system-fares-better-than-most\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported yesterday<\/a>, a Pew Center on the States Report compared each state&#8217;s pension system in 2010.\u00a0 Many states, including Idaho, took a big hit when the financial markets crashed in 2008, resulting in staggering investment losses.<\/p>\n<p>Idaho is making a <a title=\"Report: Idaho\u2019s Pension System Fares Better Than\u00a0Most\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/06\/19\/report-idahos-pension-system-fares-better-than-most\/\" target=\"_blank\">quicker comeback<\/a> than many states thanks to something called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.finance-lib.com\/financial-term-income-smoothing.html\" target=\"_blank\">smoothing<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 That basically means Idaho took its financial hit all at once, while many other states smoothed out those short term losses over a five year period.<\/p>\n<p>So, some states will continue to feel investment losses from the 2008 economic crash while Idaho\u2019s pension system is on the mend.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, <a title=\"Report: Idaho\u2019s Pension System Fares Better Than\u00a0Most\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/06\/19\/report-idahos-pension-system-fares-better-than-most\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pew reports<\/a> the gap between Idaho\u2019s assets and its obligation to fund public employee pensions was $3 billion or 79 percent funded.<\/p>\n<p>According to PERSI spokesperson Patrice Perow, Idaho\u2019s gap is now at $1.88 billion or 85 percent funded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Idaho&#8217;s public employee pension system gap continues to shrink.
