{"id":8273,"date":"2012-06-15T09:04:35","date_gmt":"2012-06-15T15:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=8273"},"modified":"2012-06-15T10:04:38","modified_gmt":"2012-06-15T16:04:38","slug":"idahos-may-jobless-rate-goes-up-ends-9-straight-months-of-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/06\/15\/idahos-may-jobless-rate-goes-up-ends-9-straight-months-of-decline\/","title":{"rendered":"Idaho&#8217;s May Jobless Rate Goes Up, Ends 9 Straight Months Of Decline"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_8275\"  class=\"wp-caption module image left\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"At least 61,000 Idahoans were out of work in May. \" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/06\/145767832.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8275\" title=\"Job Seekers Look For Employment Opportunities At Career Fair\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/06\/145767832-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/06\/145767832-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/06\/145767832-620x434.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Justin Sullivan \/ Getty Images<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">At least 61,000 Idahoans were out of work in May.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mirroring the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2012\/06\/01\/154131119\/unemployment-rate-8-2-percent-in-may-as-just-69-000-jobs-added\" target=\"_blank\">national jobless rate increase<\/a>, Idaho&#8217;s unemployment rate rose one-tenth of a percentage point last month, ending a nine-month <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/maps\/idaho\/unemployment\/#2012\/January\/Ada\" target=\"_blank\">decline<\/a> in the economic measure.<\/p>\n<p>Idaho&#8217;s seasonally adjusted<a title=\"Tracking Idaho\u2019s Unemployment Rate\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/unemployment\/\" target=\"_blank\"> jobless rate<\/a> ticked up to 7.8 percent in May, from 7.7 percent in April.<\/p>\n<p>Idaho is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/laus.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\">among 18 states<\/a> where the jobless rate went up in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/p>\n<p>The Idaho Department of Labor reports hiring slowed in the service sector.\u00a0 That can have a big impact on the rate, since four of every five Idaho jobs fall into this category. <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Idaho employers increased their payrolls 1 percent in May, but that was short of the five-year average April-May increase of 1.3 percent. While hiring in trade and information exceeded the average, all other service sectors fell short by enough to offset slightly more hiring than normal in goods production including construction.&#8221; &#8211; Idaho Dept. of Labor<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Idaho&#8217;s jobless rate has been on the decline since its post-recession high of 8.9 percent in July 2011.\u00a0 At that time, at least 68,000 Idahoans were out of work.\u00a0 As of last month, there were at least 61,000 unemployed Idahoans.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;New hires, which include replacement workers as well as additional workers, fell slightly from April but remained the strongest May since 2008.
