{"id":8190,"date":"2012-06-13T12:15:22","date_gmt":"2012-06-13T18:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=8190"},"modified":"2012-06-13T13:27:14","modified_gmt":"2012-06-13T19:27:14","slug":"work-prospects-vary-not-just-by-generation-but-by-graduation-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/06\/13\/work-prospects-vary-not-just-by-generation-but-by-graduation-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Work Prospects Vary Not Just By Generation, But By Graduation Class"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_8191\"  class=\"wp-caption module image center\" style=\"max-width: 594px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"This week, workers lined up at a job fair in New York.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/06\/6-13-Unemployment-Line.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8191\" title=\"6-13 Unemployment\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/06\/6-13-Unemployment-Line.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/06\/6-13-Unemployment-Line.jpg 594w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/06\/6-13-Unemployment-Line-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">John Moore \/ Getty Images<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">This week, workers lined up at a job fair in New York.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one lesson of the economic downturn: unemployment disadvantages different age groups in different ways.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, we <a title=\"Out-Of-Work Idaho Teens Could Be Out Of\u00a0Luck\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/06\/12\/out-of-work-idaho-teens-could-be-out-of-luck\/\">revisited the problem of high teen unemployment<\/a>, which is particularly severe here in Idaho.\u00a0 Labor economists predict the resulting lack of work experience among young people &#8212; especially those who can&#8217;t afford college or choose not to pursue post-secondary education &#8212; could negatively affect earnings years down the road. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the predicament of older people who lose jobs.\u00a0 Earlier this spring, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/GAO-12-445\" target=\"_blank\">Government Accountability Office report<\/a> stressed the particular hardship those unemployed workers face.\u00a0 The unemployment rate may be lower among older workers, but <del><\/del>when those workers lose jobs they are more likely to face long-term unemployment, the report showed.\u00a0 That, of course, can bring substantial hardship.\u00a0 &#8220;Long-term unemployment can put older workers at risk of deferring needed medical care, losing their homes, and accumulating debt,&#8221; the GAO report said.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ils\/pdf\/opbils91.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau of Labor Statistics study<\/a> explains that even slight variations in age can be predictive of how well or badly workers fared as the recession unfolded.\u00a0 The study compares the employment rate of workers born in 1980-1981 to the employment rate of those born in 1982-1983.\u00a0 The takeaway? &#8220;[Y]oung adult men and women who turned 24 or 25 years old just prior to the recent recession experienced more employment losses over the following 18-month period than the older cohort that turned 24 or 25 years old 2 years before the recession,&#8221; the report concludes.<\/p>\n<p>In other words: that two-year advantage in the workforce appears to have made a difference.\u00a0 Workers who spent a little more time in the workforce before the recession hit had a better chance of being employed as the recession unfolded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s one lesson of the economic downturn: unemployment disadvantages different age groups in different ways.
