Richards \/ AFP\/Getty Images<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Women in Idaho earn about 74 percent as much as men, according to the most recent Census figures.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The U.S. Senate is slated to vote on an equal pay bill today.\u00a0 As <em>The Boston Globe<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/bostonglobe.com\/news\/nation\/2012\/06\/04\/democrats-hope-corner-republicans-paycheck-fairness-for-working-women\/CbgBH0IshgPhSDc5vjkr3H\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a>, the Paycheck Fairness Act would address the persistent wage gap between men and women by &#8220;requiring employers of companies with pay discrepancies to provide a reason for the gap.&#8221;\u00a0 Moreover, it would &#8220;bar employers from retaliating against employees who discuss pay.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As we&#8217;ve <a title=\"Women\u2019s Wages Lag Behind Men\u2019s In Idaho By More Than 25 Percent\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/04\/10\/womens-wages-lag-behind-mens-in-idaho-by-more-than-25-percent\/\" target=\"_blank\">noted a few tim<\/a><a title=\"Women\u2019s Wages Lag Behind Men\u2019s In Idaho By More Than 25 Percent\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/04\/10\/womens-wages-lag-behind-mens-in-idaho-by-more-than-25-percent\/\" target=\"_blank\">es<\/a> here on the <em>StateImpact<\/em> site, the disparity between men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s wages is especially great in Idaho.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/03\/12\/in-boise-womens-wages-are-among-nations-worst\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boise&#8217;s pay gap<\/a> was named eighth worst in the country earlier this year, in a ranking based on U.S. Census data.<\/p>\n<p>The Paycheck Fairness Act isn&#8217;t expected to pass.\u00a0 In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/paycheck-fairness-act-expected-to-fail\/2012\/06\/04\/gJQAPqvNEV_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> titled &#8220;Paycheck Fairness Act expected to fail&#8221; <em>The Washington Post<\/em> said of the bill: &#8220;[A]t its core it is not so much a legislative vehicle as a political one intended to embarrass Republicans and help President Obama and congressional Democrats with female voters in November.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>The Hill<\/em>, Sen.
