{"id":7786,"date":"2012-06-01T08:01:51","date_gmt":"2012-06-01T14:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=7786"},"modified":"2012-06-01T10:21:44","modified_gmt":"2012-06-01T16:21:44","slug":"update-transform-solar-received-1-68-million-in-state-training-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/06\/01\/update-transform-solar-received-1-68-million-in-state-training-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"Update: Transform Solar Received $1.68 M In State Training Grants Before Announcing Layoffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_7791\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Transform Solar will lay-off at least 250 employees, shutting down its Nampa, Idaho facility.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/05\/Wafer_448x299-TransformSolar.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7791\" title=\"Wafer_448x299 TransformSolar\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/05\/Wafer_448x299-TransformSolar-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/05\/Wafer_448x299-TransformSolar-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/05\/Wafer_448x299-TransformSolar.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Transform Solar<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Transform Solar will lay-off at least 250 employees, shutting down its Nampa, Idaho facility.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Earlier this week, Micron-owned Transform Solar, a maker of high-tech solar cells, <a title=\"Idaho\u2019s Transform Solar To Close, Laying Off 250 People\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/jp\/idahos-transform-solar-to-close-laying-off-250-people\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced it&#8217;s closing<\/a> and laying-off at least 250 people over the next three months.<\/p>\n<p>We<a title=\"Idaho\u2019s Transform Solar Received $1 Million In State Training Grants\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/05\/30\/idahos-transform-solar-received-1-million-in-state-training-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\"> first reported<\/a> Transform has been reimbursed for just over $1 million of its $3.6 million <a title=\"Tracking Idaho Workforce Training Grants\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/05\/07\/tracking-idaho-workforce-training-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\">workforce development training grant<\/a> from the state of Idaho.\u00a0 That was using data from January 29.\u00a0 The Idaho Department of Labor reports as of May 30, Transform has been reimbursed for $1.68 million of that grant.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The labor department says Transform Solar will not have to return the grant money, which is paid for by a portion of the unemployment insurance tax paid by employers.\u00a0 At the very least, the labor department says Transform&#8217;s employees will leave their jobs with additional skills and training.<\/p>\n<div class=\"module aside left half\"><\/p>\n<h3>Summary of Training<\/h3>\n<p>In-house training development and delivery<br \/>\nTrain the Trainer workshops<br \/>\nTraining laptops<br \/>\nAOI System Operation and Programming<br \/>\nPhoto Voltaic, Solar Thermal, wind and geothermal energy systems<br \/>\nSupervisory &amp; HR training<br \/>\nATS SmartVision &amp; Vision system; automation tooling system<br \/>\nLean Manufacturing<br \/>\nASQ Certification<br \/>\nPhoton Safety conference<br \/>\nSupply Chain Management<br \/>\nPhototool processes and operation<br \/>\nPiping system training<br \/>\nGas and chemical systems<br \/>\nApplied Industrial Ergonomics<br \/>\nHazardous waste training<br \/>\nDupont safety training<br \/>\nProcess instrumentation and control systems<br \/>\nCompressor training<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>A labor department spokesperson emailed a list of the kinds of training Transform&#8217;s employees got through the workforce development training grant, saying many of the skills are transferable and will help those affected by the layoff transition into new jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Another solar company that <a title=\"Volatile Solar Industry Leads To Layoffs In\u00a0Idaho\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/05\/31\/volatile-solar-industry-leads-to-layoffs-in-idaho\/\" target=\"_blank\">recently announced layoffs<\/a>, Hoku Corporation, was also reimbursed for training through the Idaho Department of Labor&#8217;s workforce development training grant.\u00a0 Hoku can receive reimbursement for nearly $983,000 in training cost.
