Those positions equal about 8 percent of all Idaho jobs. <del><\/del>That&#8217;s all according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idahononprofits.org\/Portals\/1\/documents\/New%20Idaho%20Nonprofit%20Economic%20Impacts%20full%20report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">recent report<\/a> by University of Idaho economist Steven Peterson, and commissioned by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idahononprofits.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Idaho Nonprofit Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idahononprofits.org\/Portals\/1\/documents\/New%20Idaho%20Nonprofit%20Economic%20Impacts%20full%20report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">ten-page report<\/a> looks at the economic impact nonprofits have on the state.\u00a0 What Peterson found, surprised him.\u00a0 &#8220;Any way you slice these numbers up, if you take a look at the impact on Idaho\u2019s economy, they\u2019re huge,&#8221; says Peterson.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>He discovered there are 7,712 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idahononprofits.org\/Portals\/1\/documents\/New%20Idaho%20Nonprofit%20Economic%20Impacts%20full%20report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">registered nonprofits<\/a> in Idaho, with revenue in 2010 totaling $4.6 billion.\u00a0 <del><strong><\/strong><\/del><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"module aside left half\"><\/p>\n<h3>Idaho Nonprofit Quick Facts<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Charitable nonprofits directly employ more people than real estate, wholesale trade, finance and insurance, transportation, farm production and warehousing<\/li>\n<li>Nearly half (46 percent) of Idaho nonprofit jobs are non-health related<\/li>\n<li>Volunteering America reports 393,700 Idahoans volunteer annually, racking up 60 million hours of service<\/li>\n<li>Most of Idaho&#8217;s nonprofits don&#8217;t pay property taxes, but the industry paid $37 million in personal income taxes and $4.7 million in corporate income taxes in 2011<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source: The Economic Impacts of Idaho&#8217;s Nonprofit Organizations Research Report<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<p>Peterson&#8217;s data includes a wide range of nonprofits, from hospitals and religious groups to arts and culture organizations and social services.\u00a0 &#8220;From cradle to grave we interact with nonprofits in every part of our lives,&#8221; says Peterson.\u00a0 &#8220;We just don\u2019t see them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The research report concludes Idaho&#8217;s nonprofits&#8217; revenues and expenditures more than doubled from 2000 to 2011, growing at an annual pace of 8.8 percent per year.\u00a0 A large part of that growth can be attributed to the healthcare sector Peterson says.<\/p>\n<p>While the <a title=\"Defining the Recession\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/recession\/\" target=\"_blank\">Great Recession<\/a> put a strain on all industries, including nonprofits, there was a greater need for their services which also contributed to growth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 50,000 people are directly employed by charitable nonprofits in Idaho, earning on average $43,350 per year.
