Idaho received more than $13 million in a national, multi-billion dollar mortgage settlement<\/a> reached early this year.\u00a0 But the state has committed only a fraction of that amount to housing programs and alleviating the effects of the housing crisis.<\/p>\n

The historic mortgage settlement was the result of negotiations between states\u2019 attorneys general and five of the nation\u2019s largest banks.\u00a0 It was the banks\u2019 atonement for the mortgage and foreclosure practices that contributed to the housing crisis.<\/p>\n

Idaho\u2019s share of the settlement<\/a> was more than $110 million.\u00a0 Much of that money was earmarked for borrowers, but the state itself received $13.3 million.\u00a0 Now, homeowner advocates in Idaho are crying foul because only half a million of that has been appropriated for housing programs.<\/p>\n

Brett DeLange heads the Consumer Protection Division of the Idaho attorney general\u2019s office.\u00a0 He says what to do with the money is up to Idaho lawmakers.\u00a0 “It\u2019s something for the legislature to weigh,” he said.\u00a0 “And so far they\u2019ve weighed it, and the way they\u2019ve done it is with the appropriation they\u2019ve done to-date.”<\/p>\n
