He lost his mill job in October, 2011.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Idaho&#8217;s economy is moving in a positive direction, but it still hasn&#8217;t made up for the jobs lost during the Great Recession.\u00a0 Allen Brown got his layoff notice in the fall of 2011.\u00a0 Now, at 44-years-old, he&#8217;s waiting to start a new career.\u00a0 We check in with Brown for our continuing series<a title=\"Series: Jobless in\u00a0Idaho\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/jobless-in-idaho\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Jobless In Idaho<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By the middle of February, Lewiston, Idaho resident Allen Brown had set his sights on work in the oilfields and was making plans to head to Wyoming for new job training.<\/p>\n<p>Brown was laid off from the <a title=\"Idaho Forest Group Buys Lewiston Sawmill\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2011\/10\/26\/idaho-forest-group-buys-lewiston-sawmill\/\" target=\"_blank\">Clearwater Paper sawmill<\/a> late last year.\u00a0 After several weeks of job searching in Lewiston, Brown <del><\/del>met with a recruiter for oil services giant Schlumberger.\u00a0 He was <a title=\"Jobless in Idaho: Leaving Home for the Oilfields\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/02\/01\/jobless-in-idaho-leaving-home-for-the-oilfields\/\" target=\"_blank\">promised a job<\/a> as an electronic tech<strong>,<\/strong> commuting out of state, after his February interview. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Now, three months later, Brown hasn&#8217;t left for training camp.\u00a0 He&#8217;s still waiting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I finally feel like I found a job and then all of a sudden it gets pulled out from under your feet,&#8221; Brown said recently.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Recruiting president Ron Garrison is a job recruiter for Schlumberger.\u00a0 He&#8217;s sent<del><\/del> more than 400 Idahoans to Schlumberger in the last year.\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. Recruiting is the same company that hooked Brown up with Schlumberger.\u00a0 Garrison says he currently has about 50<del><\/del> people <strong><\/strong>in his &#8216;inventory&#8217; waiting to officially start work with the company.\u00a0 That includes Brown.<\/p>\n<div class=\"related-content alignleft\"><h4 class=\"related-header\">Related<\/h4><div class=\"links\"><h5>Posts<\/h5><ul><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/04\/20\/idahos-jobless-rate-dips-below-8-percent\/\">Idaho\u2019s Jobless Rate Dips Below 8 Percent<\/a><\/li><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2011\/12\/15\/jobless-in-idaho-laid-off-mill-worker-uncertain-of-his-future\/\">Jobless in Idaho: Laid Off Mill Worker Uncertain of His Future<\/a><\/li><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/02\/01\/jobless-in-idaho-leaving-home-for-the-oilfields\/\">Jobless in Idaho: Leaving Home for the Oilfields<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"topics\"><h5>Topics<\/h5><p class=\"topic\"><img class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/AppScn3-60x60.jpg\" height=\"60\" width=\"60\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/unemployment-app\/\">Work in Progress: Idaho\u2019s Unemployment App<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Garrison couldn&#8217;t confirm why a hiring slowdown has occurred.\u00a0 He guesses<del><\/del> its because oil and natural gas <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattlepi.com\/business\/article\/Oil-prices-fall-for-a-5th-day-down-2-percent-3542613.php\" target=\"_blank\">prices have fallen<\/a>.\u00a0 Several calls to Schlumberger weren&#8217;t returned.<\/p>\n<p>Back in February, Brown was told his start-date would be put on hold for 30 to 60 days. Last week, his recruiter called asking if he was still interested in the job and assured Brown he&#8217;d head to training within a month.\u00a0 But Brown is a single father with three teenage daughters.\u00a0 He couldn&#8217;t sit idle.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To keep from bleeding all my savings away, I found a job up here in the area.\u00a0 But it doesn\u2019t pay like I was before, and it doesn\u2019t even quite cover my monthly bills,&#8221; says Brown.\u00a0 He&#8217;s earning about $12 an hour, about half of what he was earning at the sawmill and<del><\/del> a fraction of what he&#8217;s been offered with Schlumberger.\u00a0 <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brown is eager to start his new career.\u00a0 He&#8217;s invested $1,500<del><\/del> in necessary tools he&#8217;ll need as an electronic tech for Schlumberger.\u00a0 And now, as the job hold continues, he&#8217;s hopeful it hasn&#8217;t all been for naught.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You kind of make plans,&#8221; says Brown. \u00a0 &#8220;All of a sudden you have word, and a feeling you\u2019ll get paid well.&#8221;\u00a0 Brown&#8217;s<a title=\"Jobless in Idaho: Leaving Home for the Oilfields\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/02\/01\/jobless-in-idaho-leaving-home-for-the-oilfields\/\" target=\"_blank\"> job offer<\/a> included a six-figure salary plus benefits.\u00a0 &#8220;I loosened up my check book a little bit we bought some stuff, and I got some stuff prepared for going over there.\u00a0 Now, it\u2019s tightening up even tighter than it was before because I just don\u2019t know whats going to happen here in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><a title=\"Series: Jobless in\u00a0Idaho\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/jobless-in-idaho\/\" target=\"_blank\">Click here<\/a> to learn more about our series Jobless In Idaho.\u00a0 To share your story of losing a job, finding a new one or struggling in between go to our <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/maps\/idaho\/unemployment\/#2012\/January\/Adahttp:\/\/\" target=\"_blank\">Work In Progress news app<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Idaho&#8217;s economy is moving in a positive direction, but it still hasn&#8217;t made up for the jobs lost during the Great Recession.\u00a0 Allen Brown got his layoff notice in the fall of 2011.\u00a0 Now, at 44-years-old, he&#8217;s waiting to start a new career.\u00a0 We check in with Brown for our continuing series Jobless In Idaho.
