C.L. &#8220;Butch&#8221; Otter has signed off on more than $5.5 million in grant awards to Idaho communities.<\/p>\n<p>Otter followed the guidance of the Idaho Economic Advisory Council in his decisions, approving all 18 grant proposals that the council <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/04\/18\/twin-falls-fairfield-recommended-for-grant-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\">recommended for funding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Twin Falls will receive $500,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant dollars to upgrade its water system.\u00a0 That&#8217;s necessary to support the new <a title=\"New York Yogurt Maker Bringing 400 Jobs to Twin Falls, Idaho\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2011\/11\/03\/new-york-yogurt-maker-bringing-400-jobs-to-twin-falls-idaho\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chobani yogurt plant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fairfield will also receive a half-million-dollar grant for water system improvements.\u00a0 The full list of grant recipients is available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commerce.idaho.gov\/news\/2012\/05\/governor-otter-awards-idaho-community-development-block-grants.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As <em>StateImpact<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/04\/11\/idaho-communities-compete-for-dollars-as-grant-funds-drop\/\" target=\"_blank\">has reported<\/a>, funding for the <a href=\"http:\/\/portal.hud.gov\/hudportal\/HUD?src=\/program_offices\/comm_planning\/communitydevelopment\/programs\" target=\"_blank\">Community Development Block Grant Program<\/a> has fallen by about a quarter over the last two years.\u00a0 The program has about $10 million available for this year.\u00a0 In this, the first of four rounds of funding decisions, more than half of that total has already been allocated.<\/p>\n<p>As Idaho Department of Commerce Community Development Manager Bruce Porter said of the program earlier this month, \u201cWe run into more demand than dollars.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
