Hopes Training Fund Expansion Could Spur Job Growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_4503\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"The state's Department of Labor administers the Idaho Workforce Development Training Fund.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/Department-of-Labor-office.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4503\" title=\"Department of Labor Meridian\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/Department-of-Labor-office-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/Department-of-Labor-office-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/Department-of-Labor-office-220x143.jpg 220w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/Department-of-Labor-office.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Molly Messick \/ StateImpact Idaho<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The state&#39;s Department of Labor administers the Idaho Workforce Development Training Fund.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>More Idaho workers would be eligible for subsidized worker training under a proposal that will go before the state&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/labor.idaho.gov\/dnn\/StateCouncil\/tabid\/539\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Workforce Development Council<\/a> next month.<\/p>\n<p>The council will decide whether to allow employers to tap into the state&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/labor.idaho.gov\/publications\/workforce_training_fund.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Workforce Development Training Fund<\/a> to train workers replacing existing employees.\u00a0 Currently, the fund can only be used if businesses are expanding or averting a layoff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have $16 million in the training fund right now,&#8221; says Department of Labor Assistant Deputy Director Dwight Johnson.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a larger amount than the fund has held in more robust economic times.\u00a0 &#8220;Given that balance, we want to be more aggressive in using that fund to train Idahoans to fill vacancies with businesses,&#8221; Johnson says.<\/p>\n<p>The fund reimburses employers for the actual costs of training workers.\u00a0 Johnson believes employers in the high tech, health care, advanced manufacturing and energy industries would be most likely to take advantage of the funding, if the proposal is approved.\u00a0 The expanded eligibility would remain in effect as long as Idaho&#8217;s <a title=\"Work in Progress: Idaho\u2019s Unemployment App\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/unemployment-app\/\" target=\"_blank\">unemployment rate<\/a> remains at or above 7 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Labor&#8217;s press release about the upcoming decision is available <a href=\"http:\/\/labor.idaho.gov\/news\/NewsReleases\/tabid\/1953\/ctl\/PressRelease\/mid\/2527\/itemid\/2424\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More Idaho workers would be eligible for subsidized worker training under a proposal that will go before the state&#8217;s Workforce Development Council next month.
