{"id":6643,"date":"2012-04-16T14:45:06","date_gmt":"2012-04-16T20:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=6643"},"modified":"2012-04-17T10:05:10","modified_gmt":"2012-04-17T16:05:10","slug":"a-trying-year-for-southern-idaho-ski-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/04\/16\/a-trying-year-for-southern-idaho-ski-areas\/","title":{"rendered":"A Trying Year For Southern Idaho Ski Areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_6644\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Bogus Basin ski area near Boise, Idaho.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/BogusBasinSkiHill_ChadCase.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6644\" title=\"Sunset over Bogus Basin Ski Resort with the city lights of Boise beyond.\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/BogusBasinSkiHill_ChadCase-300x183.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/BogusBasinSkiHill_ChadCase-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/BogusBasinSkiHill_ChadCase-620x379.jpg 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/BogusBasinSkiHill_ChadCase.jpg 718w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Chad Case<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bogus Basin ski area near Boise, Idaho.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Southern Idaho ski areas are wrapping up their seasons.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bogusbasin.org\/\">Bogus Basin<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunvalley.com\/\">Sun Valley<\/a> have closed their lifts.\u00a0 Brundage has one more weekend, possibly more, if the snow holds.\u00a0 This ski season has been a trying year for them.<\/p>\n<p>Bogus Basin and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brundage.com\/\">Brundage Mountain<\/a> had a late start to their ski seasons.\u00a0 Bogus opened January 19th, the latest opening day ever.\u00a0 That means it missed the crucial Thanksgiving and winter holidays when attendance is highest.\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Alan Moore manages the ski area.\u00a0 He says, &#8220;It was so far outside of the norm that it really took us by surprise and we weren\u2019t quite ready for it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Near McCall, Brundage Mountain opened at the tail end of the winter holidays.\u00a0 Since then snow has fallen consistently. \u00a0 Resort spokeswoman April Russell says, &#8220;Of course, missing December except for two days, really takes a big chunk off our total.&#8221;\u00a0 The holidays account for roughly a quarter of the season\u2019s revenue according to Russell.<\/p>\n<p>For Bogus Basin, missing that period entirely cost the ski area more than $2 million in lost sales.\u00a0 Moore says Bogus Basin had to <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/01\/04\/bogus-basin-ski-area-cuts-pay-hours-and-jobs\/\">cut costs and let some people go<\/a> to dig out of a financial hole.\u00a0 &#8220;And as far as the bottom line that\u2019s probably about a $500,000 loss by the time we complete our fiscal year which is May 31st.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Although Sun Valley opened Thanksgiving Day, they saw a dip in visitors this year.\u00a0 Jack Sibbach directs marketing and public relations for the resort.\u00a0\u00a0 He says,\u00a0 &#8220;In terms of skier numbers we will be down probably about 5% from last year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brundage and Sun Valley are privately-owned so they don\u2019t divulge financial information.\u00a0 Bogus Basin is a non-profit.\u00a0 Moore says the Boise ski area had its worst season in at least six years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Southern Idaho ski areas are wrapping up their seasons.\u00a0 Bogus Basin and Sun Valley have closed their lifts.\u00a0 Brundage has one more weekend, possibly more, if the snow holds.\u00a0 This ski season has been a trying year for them.
