{"id":6322,"date":"2012-04-05T14:28:38","date_gmt":"2012-04-05T20:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=6322"},"modified":"2012-04-05T14:28:38","modified_gmt":"2012-04-05T20:28:38","slug":"high-gas-prices-affect-station-owners-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/04\/05\/high-gas-prices-affect-station-owners-too\/","title":{"rendered":"High Gas Prices Affect Station Owners, Too"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_6329\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Idaho fares relatively well as gas prices rise, but higher prices still take their toll on station owners.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/4-5-Gas-Prices.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6329\" title=\"Gas pump\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/4-5-Gas-Prices-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/4-5-Gas-Prices-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/4-5-Gas-Prices-620x413.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Ki Price \/ AFP\/Getty Images<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Idaho fares relatively well as gas prices rise, but higher prices still take their toll on station owners.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Idaho is faring somewhat better than many other states in terms of gas prices, as Boise State Public Radio <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boisestatepublicradio.org\/post\/supply-demand-and-speculation-play-roles-high-gas-prices\" target=\"_blank\">recently reported<\/a>.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"http:\/\/fuelgaugereport.aaa.com\/?redirectto=http:\/\/fuelgaugereport.opisnet.com\/index.asp\" target=\"_blank\">AAA&#8217;s Daily Fuel Gauge Report<\/a>, a gallon of regular will now run you about $3.78 in Idaho, well below the <a href=\"http:\/\/fuelgaugereport.aaa.com\/?redirectto=http:\/\/fuelgaugereport.opisnet.com\/index.asp\" target=\"_blank\">current national average<\/a> of $3.94.<\/p>\n<p>For Idaho&#8217;s gas station owners, that&#8217;s cold comfort.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052702303299604577323661725847318.html?mod=WSJ_hp_LEFTTopStories\" target=\"_blank\">today points out<\/a> that rising gas prices are taking a toll on independent station owners.\u00a0 &#8220;Until the past five years or so, many gas stations were, in fact, owned by the big energy companies,&#8221; the article says.\u00a0 &#8220;But most have since sold off their portfolio of stations to focus on more profitable areas, such as wholesale fuel sales.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Now, high credit card processing fees and falling convenience store sales are cutting into owners&#8217; profit margins.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a problem that&#8217;s especially evident in Idaho, according to Suzanne Budge of the Idaho Petroleum Marketers &amp; Convenience Store Association.\u00a0 &#8220;Of course, all stations in Idaho are independently owned,&#8221; she says.\u00a0 &#8220;We don&#8217;t have any that I know of that are company-owned.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not Exxon, it&#8217;s not Chevron that&#8217;s living or dying with the bottom line.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Budge says gas stations make their money on things like coffee and candy bars, and high gas prices have a direct effect on those sales.\u00a0 &#8220;Everything that impacts how much foot traffic they get impacts how much people spend in stores,&#8221; she says.\u00a0 &#8220;And the higher the price of gas goes, people are spending less money on other stuff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That puts Idaho&#8217;s independent owners in a sorry bind.\u00a0 &#8220;Not only do they get blamed for high prices,&#8221; Budge says.\u00a0 &#8220;When prices are going up, it&#8217;s much harder to make any money.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Idaho is faring somewhat better than many other states in terms of gas prices, as Boise State Public Radio recently reported.\u00a0 According to AAA&#8217;s Daily Fuel Gauge Report, a gallon of regular will now run you about $3.78 in Idaho, well below the current national average of $3.94.
