{"id":6204,"date":"2012-04-02T14:22:40","date_gmt":"2012-04-02T20:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=6204"},"modified":"2012-04-02T14:33:55","modified_gmt":"2012-04-02T20:33:55","slug":"construction-numbers-complicate-recovery-picture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/04\/02\/construction-numbers-complicate-recovery-picture\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction Numbers Complicate Recovery Picture"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_6212\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"A construction worker took measurements while putting siding on a new California home last month.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/4-2-Construction.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6212\" title=\"4-2 Construction\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/4-2-Construction-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/4-2-Construction-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/04\/4-2-Construction-620x401.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Justin Sullivan \/ Getty Images News<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A construction worker took measurements while putting siding on a new California home last month.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Total U.S. construction spending fell in February, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/const\/C30\/release.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Census Bureau figures<\/a> released today.\u00a0 The drop was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/04\/02\/us-usa-economy-idUSBRE82Q0VN20120402\" target=\"_blank\">the largest in seven months<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Calculated Risk <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog<\/a> has posted a couple of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2012\/04\/construction-spending-declines-in.html\" target=\"_blank\">handy graphs<\/a> showing construction spending over time and by category.<\/p>\n<p>Idaho has seen a substantial decline in <a title=\"Construction: The Heart of Idaho\u2019s Recession\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/construction\/\" target=\"_blank\">construction<\/a> <em>employment<\/em> since the start of the recession.\u00a0 <!--more-->According to state Department of Labor figures, monthly employment in the sector averaged 52,500 people in 2007.\u00a0 <del><\/del>By <del><\/del>2011, average monthly employment in the sector was down to 29,500, a nearly 44 percent decline.<\/p>\n<p>The early months of this year show a slight drop in construction employment compared to early 2011.\u00a0 In February of this year, the construction sector employed 25,300 people in Idaho.\u00a0 That&#8217;s 300 fewer than in the same month last year.<\/p>\n<p>Complicating that picture: last week, a Brookings Institution <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/reports\/2011\/0622_metro_monitor.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> showed Boise&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/03\/29\/boises-rebound-by-the-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\">housing market is looking up<\/a>.\u00a0 Meanwhile, area builders are reporting rising demand for new homes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Total U.S. construction spending fell in February, according to Census Bureau figures released today.\u00a0 The drop was the largest in seven months.
