Joblessness has long-lasting effects.\u00a0 It’s a troubling fact, and one that has received particular attention in this downturn, during which the average length of unemployment<\/a> has surpassed all earlier records.<\/p>\n

Here at StateImpact Idaho<\/em>, we’ve touched on<\/a> the effects of unemployment on long-term earnings prospects through our Jobless in Idaho<\/a><\/em> reporting. <\/p>\n

Given that focus, this post<\/a> on The New York Times<\/em> Economix blog caught our eye this week.\u00a0 Reporter Binyamin Appelbaum takes a look at the “wave of research” dedicated to understanding the effects of unemployment.\u00a0 A warning: the results are grim.\u00a0 Take this example:<\/p>\n

Studies show that people who can\u2019t find work become more likely as time marches on to suffer from depression and other health problems, according to a 2005 literature review<\/a> by professors at Oregon State University.<\/p>\n

A 2010 Pew survey<\/a> on the experience of long-term unemployment was aptly entitled, \u201cLost Income, Lost Friends \u2013 and Loss of Self-Respect.\u201d — The New York Times<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s an interesting read, and a reminder that — even as the unemployment rate ticks downward<\/a> — plenty of people remain jobless<\/a><\/del>.\u00a0 For them, the challenges only compound with time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
