(Click on the chart to enlarge)\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl>\n\t\t\t<br style='clear: both' \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>President of Scentsy North America, Mark Stastny, says the company&#8217;s sales people earn a wide range of money.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong>\u201cWe have ladies who\u2019ve joined literally to supplement their income to make a car payment,\u201d\u00a0 Stastny says.\u00a0 &#8220;We have other ladies that have built very successful businesses and indeed whose husbands are now joining them, that are making very high six figure and in some cases seven figures annually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stastny says the growth of the company, which launched in 2004, has been a surprise.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019ve done everything we can to try and keep up with it, but those are good problems to have in a down economy,\u201d says Stastny.<\/p>\n<h4>Building A Company<\/h4>\n<p><a title=\"Inside Meridian-Based Scentsy\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/scentsy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scentsy was founded<\/a> by two Utah homemakers and then sold to Orville and Heidi Thompson.\u00a0 The Thompson\u2019s moved the company to Meridian, Idaho.\u00a0 They adopted a direct sales model, and watched revenue climb from $140,000 in 2004 to $535 million in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Their growth didn\u2019t slow during the peak of the recession.\u00a0 If anything, Stastny says the company grew faster, adding staff daily.\u00a0 Today, Scentsy has about 1,000 corporate employees spread across its facilities in Idaho and distribution centers in Texas and Kentucky*.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5981\"  class=\"wp-caption module image left\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Retail sales went down during the recession and have begun climbing back up. (Click on the chart to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Amy Robinson is the Chief Marketing Officer at the Direct Selling Association.\u00a0 She says while overall sales across the industry were down during the recession, some companies did grow.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>\u201cThis has a lot to do with the ability of the company to manage growth and support that growth at a corporate level,\u201d\u00a0 Robinson says.<\/p>\n<p>She says Scentsy\u2019s growth isn\u2019t that unusual.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong> \u201cNot every company can experience growth the way they have.\u00a0 But they\u2019re certainly not unique in that they are the only one\u2019s that\u2019s ever happened to.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Staying Power<\/h4>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Back at her Scentsy booth, Maggie Clark says she lost income when the stock market tanked, she was trying to pay for college for her five kids and not use up her savings.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong> \u201cI used to be almost embarrassed saying I\u2019m selling Scentsy now,&#8221; Clark admits.\u00a0 &#8220;And now I just stand tall and it\u2019s like you know what, I\u2019m college educated, and I\u2019m just going to laugh all the way to the bank \u2013 life\u2019s funny twists and turns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Clark grows her business, Scentsy is doing the same.\u00a0 It\u2019s introduced new personal-care product lines and a new brand \u2013 <a title=\"Scentsy Launches Fondue Product Line, Could Create More\u00a0Jobs\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/01\/20\/scentsy-launches-fondue-product-line-could-create-more-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\">chocolate fondue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Time will determine if Scentsy has what it takes to become a household name like Mary Kay, Avon or Pampered Chef.<\/p>\n<p><em>*StateImpact Idaho originally reported Scentsy&#8217;s distribution center is in Kansas when in fact the distribution center is in Kentucky.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many Idaho companies issued a fair number of pink slips during the recession.\u00a0 But Meridian-based Scentsy didn\u2019t.
