{"id":4640,"date":"2012-02-07T10:32:23","date_gmt":"2012-02-07T17:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=4640"},"modified":"2012-07-17T12:56:07","modified_gmt":"2012-07-17T18:56:07","slug":"supervalu-laying-off-130-corporate-employees-in-boise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/02\/07\/supervalu-laying-off-130-corporate-employees-in-boise\/","title":{"rendered":"Supervalu Laying Off 130 Corporate Employees in Boise"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_4641\"  class=\"wp-caption module image left\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Supervalu bought the Albertsons chain in 2006. \" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/Albertsons_PF.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4641\" title=\"Albertsons_PF\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/Albertsons_PF-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/Albertsons_PF-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/Albertsons_PF-620x479.jpg 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/Albertsons_PF-220x170.jpg 220w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/02\/Albertsons_PF.jpg 792w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Supervalu Inc.<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Supervalu bought the Albertsons chain in 2006.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Supervalu Inc., the parent company of Albertsons grocery stores, is laying off about 130 employees at its Boise corporate office.<\/p>\n<p>Supervalu <a href=\"http:\/\/www.supervaluinvestors.com\/phoenix.zhtml?c=93272&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1657868&amp;highlight=\" target=\"_blank\">announced today<\/a> the reduction is part of a nationwide move to reduce operating costs.\u00a0 Spokesman Mike Siemienas says Supervalu will reduce its workforce by 800.\u00a0 That&#8217;s out of a total workforce of 135,000 nationwide.\u00a0 Those cuts will be complete by February 25.<\/p>\n<p>Siemienas says corporate employees in Boise are getting layoff notices this week.\u00a0 He says the roughly 130 positions being cut include entry level corporate jobs, as well as finance, IT and marketing positions.\u00a0 Siemienas says the layoffs do not affect store-level employees. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Associates who receive layoff notices will be eligible for severance pay and outplacement services.\u00a0 Siemienas says those employees will be able to apply for other open positions within the company.<\/p>\n<p>Siemienas says this announcement continues Supervalu&#8217;s strategic plan to remove permanent expenses which will help the grocery store chain deliver more competitive pricing to its customers.\u00a0 That message also came through in a company statement released this morning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese reductions are necessary to help further strengthen and accelerate SUPERVALU\u2019s business turnaround in a very competitive marketplace,\u201d said Craig Herkert, SUPERVALU\u2019s chief executive officer and president. \u201cWhile the announcement of a workforce reduction is difficult news to share, due to its direct impact on our associates, these changes will allow us to better connect with customers and put more authority in the hands of people who interact more closely with our customers.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Supervalu has about 4,300 retail stores across the country.\u00a0 Stores include Albertsons, Hornbacher&#8217;s, Jewel-Osco, Cub Foods and Shop &#8216;n Save.<\/p>\n<p>Supervalu\/Albertsons is one of <a title=\"Where the Jobs Are (and Aren\u2019t) in\u00a0Idaho\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/01\/31\/where-the-jobs-are-and-arent-in-idaho\/\" target=\"_blank\">Idaho&#8217;s top employers<\/a>.\u00a0 According to workforce data, the company employed between 3,000 and 4,000 people in 2011.\u00a0 That&#8217;s compared to 5,000-6,000 back in 2005.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Supervalu Inc., the parent company of Albertsons grocery stores, is laying off about 130 employees at its Boise corporate office.
