He&#39;s been out of work since October, 2011.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Name: Allen Brown<\/h4>\n<h4>Age: 44<\/h4>\n<h4>Unemployed Since: October 2011<\/h4>\n<h4>&#8220;Every day I go out and look for a job, come back in and look at my answering machine, see if it\u2019s flashing, see if I\u2019ve gotten a call \u2013 but as of yet, I haven\u2019t.&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p><em>The Idaho Department of Labor estimates nearly 70,000 people in the state don\u2019t have jobs.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t include thousands more who are underemployed or have stopped looking for work.\u00a0 This is the latest story in our \u201cJobless in Idaho\u201d series, that follows several Idahoans in their search for\u00a0work.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When the Clearwater Paper sawmill <a title=\"Idaho Forest Group Buys Lewiston Sawmill\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2011\/10\/26\/idaho-forest-group-buys-lewiston-sawmill\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> it was selling its Lewiston mill to the Idaho Forest Group back in October, the fate of 250 mill jobs was unclear.\u00a0 For many, it still is, even as the mill gets ready to re-open next week.\u00a0 For one of those laid-off workers, the upcoming holidays are just a reminder of that uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"100%\" height=\"81\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/player.soundcloud.com\/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F30653139&amp;show_comments=true&amp;auto_play=false&amp;color=17807E\" \/><embed width=\"100%\" height=\"81\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"https:\/\/player.soundcloud.com\/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F30653139&amp;show_comments=true&amp;auto_play=false&amp;color=17807E\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" \/><\/object> <a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/stateimpactid\/jobless-in-idaho\">Jobless in Idaho: Laid Off Mill Worker Uncertain of his Future<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This year, December 25<sup>th<\/sup> has taken on a new meaning for Allen Brown.\u00a0 It\u2019s the day he\u2019ll receive his final severance-pay-check from the former Clearwater Paper sawmill in Lewiston.\u00a0 \u201cSo, Merry Christmas,&#8221; Brown says.\u00a0 &#8220;I\u2019ll be trying to live on unemployment and raise three kids and myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brown is one of the mill-workers who got laid off earlier this year when Spokane-based Clearwater Paper sold its Lewiston mill to the Idaho Forest Group.\u00a0 Brown was a saw-filer.\u00a0 &#8220;I helped to sharpen and take care of the large band saws they cut they wood with,&#8221; Brown says.\u00a0 &#8220;But, I\u2019m not banking on that.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been networking and trying to find my own job.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to create my own destiny and find a job on my own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brown thinks he&#8217;s in a better spot than many of his former mill colleagues, because he has an associate&#8217;s degree in electronics.\u00a0 He&#8217;s also gotten certified to be a roadside flagger.\u00a0 And now he\u2019s considering additional certifications for welding and semi-truck driving.\u00a0 But at 44 years old, he\u2019s facing competition from people half his age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got my education and hoped I could ride that out until I retired,&#8221; says Brown.\u00a0 &#8220;But now I\u2019m trying to grab up anything else, and trying to make myself look better than the next guy that\u2019s applying for the same job, or the next 100 guys that I\u2019m up against.\u00a0 It\u2019s tough.\u00a0 It\u2019s really tough right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brown is trying to make his severance pay from the mill last for the next couple of months.\u00a0 And he gets $300 a week in unemployment benefits.\u00a0 Those expire in April.\u00a0 He\u2019s raising three teenage daughters on his own, and doesn\u2019t receive regular child support payments.\u00a0 Brown says he&#8217;s trying to cutback and just do the minimal.\u00a0 &#8220;Of course everybody has to have their cell phone and I\u2019m looking at trying to get that contract eliminated, and of course that doesn\u2019t go over too well with teenage kids,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Brown says there is an upside to being out of work.\u00a0 &#8220;Coming off this shift work where they\u2019d hardly ever see me, (I was) working 12 hour days, I\u2019m now able to cook breakfast for them and was able to cook a Thanksgiving dinner for my mom and grandma and immediate family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brown\u2019s applied for a handful of jobs in the area, with Schweitzer Engineering and a local boat manufacturer.\u00a0 And he\u2019s doing a lot of networking with old co-workers and friends around town.\u00a0 But he says many potential employers are all holding out until after the holidays to make any hiring decisions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every day I go out and look for a job, come back in and look at my answering machine, see if it\u2019s flashing, see if I\u2019ve gotten a call or anything\u2013 but as of yet, I haven\u2019t,&#8221;
