{"id":2127,"date":"2011-11-18T12:21:14","date_gmt":"2011-11-18T19:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=2127"},"modified":"2011-11-23T09:50:33","modified_gmt":"2011-11-23T16:50:33","slug":"idahos-unemployment-rate-moves-in-a-positive-direction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2011\/11\/18\/idahos-unemployment-rate-moves-in-a-positive-direction\/","title":{"rendered":"Idaho&#8217;s Unemployment Rate Moves in a Positive Direction"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2129\"  class=\"wp-caption module image left\" style=\"max-width: 250px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/maps\/idaho\/idaho-unemployment\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2129\" title=\"OctMap_Left\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2011\/11\/OctMap_Left-300x360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2011\/11\/OctMap_Left-300x360.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2011\/11\/OctMap_Left-220x264.jpg 220w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2011\/11\/OctMap_Left.jpg 395w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Matt Stiles \/ StateImpact<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click on the map for an interactive view of county-by-county data<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Idaho&#8217;s unemployment rate last month ticked down to its lowest level in nearly two years.\u00a0 The Idaho Department of Labor <a href=\"http:\/\/labor.idaho.gov\/news\/NewsReleases\/tabid\/1953\/ctl\/PressRelease\/mid\/2527\/itemid\/2376\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> the seasonally adjusted rate dropped two-tenths of a percent to 8.8.\u00a0 The national unemployment rate for October was 9.0 percent.<\/p>\n<p>There are still at least 66,400 Idahoans without jobs, that&#8217;s down from 73,600 a year ago.\u00a0 Idaho Department of Labor spokesman Bob Fick says those figures don&#8217;t include people who have stopped looking for work or who have part-time jobs but are wanting to work full-time.<\/p>\n<p>Fick says it&#8217;s slightly unusual to see a drop in the unemployment rate between September and October, because that&#8217;s typically a time when seasonal employees are dropped from payrolls and join the job hunt.\u00a0 &#8220;Employers reduced jobs by only 900, typically, it\u2019s substantially more than that,&#8221; Fick says.\u00a0 &#8220;During the expansion from 2002 to 2007 the average was 1,800 jobs lost between September and October.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The state&#8217;s unemployment rate never reached into double-digits, it peaked at 9.7 percent in December through March.\u00a0 Still, there are <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/maps\/idaho\/idaho-unemployment\/\">15 counties in Idaho<\/a> where the jobless rate is in double-digits.\u00a0 Fick says most of those counties are rural and primarily resource based.\u00a0 Two exceptions are Kootenai County, in the northern panhandle and Canyon County, in south-western Idaho. \u00a0 &#8220;You did see a decline in the rates in both Kootenai and Canyon Counties the two urban counties that have been in double digits for over a year,&#8221; Fick says.\u00a0 &#8220;While they\u2019re still in double digits, they\u2019re down in the 10-percent range.\u00a0 That is another little piece of evidence that the economy has picked itself off the bottom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adams County has the highest jobless rate in the state at 18.8 percent.\u00a0 Owyhee County has the lowest rate at 5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Click on the <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/maps\/idaho\/idaho-unemployment\/\">map<\/a> for an interactive look at the county-by-county data.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Idaho&#8217;s unemployment rate last month ticked down to its lowest level in nearly two years.\u00a0 The Idaho Department of Labor reports the seasonally adjusted rate dropped two-tenths of a percent to 8.8.\u00a0 The national unemployment rate for October was 9.0 percent.
