On June 25, 1938, Roosevelt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.gov\/oasam\/programs\/history\/flsa1938.htm\" target=\"_blank\">signed the Fair Labor Standards Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the minimum wage was created, it&#8217;s been increased federally <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.gov\/whd\/minwage\/chart.htm\" target=\"_blank\">at least 25 times<\/a>. At least 18 states have increased the wage above the federal minimum, but not in Idaho.<\/p>\n<p>Idaho&#8217;s minimum wage has been at $7.25 since 2009.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As <em>StateImpact<\/em> has extensively reported, Idaho now has the <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/tag\/bottom-rung\/\" target=\"_blank\">largest percentage of minimum wage workers in the country<\/a>. President Obama said in his 2013 State of the Union address the wage floor should be <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2013\/02\/27\/idaho-leads-nation-in-minimum-wage-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\">$9 an hour<\/a>. Many Republicans have said that would hurt job creation.<\/p>\n<p>Two out of Idaho&#8217;s four Congressman don&#8217;t support a minimum wage increase. <a title=\"Bottom Rung: The Politics Of Increasing Idaho\u2019s Minimum Wage\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2013\/05\/13\/bottom-rung-the-politics-of-increasing-the-minimum-wage\/\" target=\"_blank\">As we reported last month<\/a>, Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) doesn\u2019t support raising the rate to $9 an hour. A spokesman for Sen. Crapo said a minimum wage increase will put a strain on employers and hinder job growth.<\/p>\n<p>Idaho&#8217;s state Legislature also hasn&#8217;t shown any interest in raising the minimum wage above the federal floor. That inaction has led to a <a title=\"Initiative Campaign Launches To Raise Idaho\u2019s Minimum Wage\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2013\/06\/10\/initiative-campaign-launches-to-raise-idahos-minimum-wage\/\" target=\"_blank\">citizen initiative push<\/a>. If organizers successfully gather enough signatures, it could be up to Idaho voters to decide if the wage increases here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Franklin D.
