The U.S. Census Bureau has taken a closer look at business on the state and county levels. The agency released this map<\/a> today that shows where Idaho’s businesses are concentrated, their estimated number of employees and the estimated annual payroll.<\/p>\n

The 2011 data from the American Community Survey shows there were 42,399 businesses in Idaho, employing 482,772 with an annual payroll of $16.8 billion. The statistics don’t include self-employed businesses, employees of private households, or government.<\/p>\n

The data also show<\/a> the vast majority of Idaho’s businesses, 40,944, employ fewer than 50 people. From 1998 to 2007, the number of businesses here steadily increased, then the recession hit.<\/p>\n

The number of businesses in Idaho hasn’t met or exceeded the 2007 pre-recession peak. But total payroll has started to climb.<\/p>\n

\nWith 11,898 businesses in Ada County, it’s no surprise Idaho’s population center had the largest number of companies in 2011. The fewest number of businesses in 2011 went to Clark County with 14 companies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
