Still, big banks have started offering short-term, high-interest loans to make up for the loss in the payday lending industry.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Wall Street Journal <\/em>this week <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424127887323551004578441003256035788.html\" target=\"_blank\">summed up <\/a>how those loans work, and which banks offer them. <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Direct-deposit advances, which are offered by <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/public\/quotes\/main.html?type=djn&amp;symbol=USB\">U.S. Bancorp<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/public\/quotes\/main.html?type=djn&amp;symbol=USB?mod=inlineTicker\" target=\"\">USB\u00a0+1.08%<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/public\/quotes\/main.html?type=djn&amp;symbol=WFC\">Wells Fargo<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/public\/quotes\/main.html?type=djn&amp;symbol=WFC?mod=inlineTicker\" target=\"\">WFC\u00a0+1.09%<\/a> &amp; Co., <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/public\/quotes\/main.html?type=djn&amp;symbol=RF\">Regions Financial<\/a> Corp., <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/public\/quotes\/main.html?type=djn&amp;symbol=RF?mod=inlineTicker\" target=\"\">RF\u00a0+3.62%<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/public\/quotes\/main.html?type=djn&amp;symbol=FITB\">Fifth Third Bancorp<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/public\/quotes\/main.html?type=djn&amp;symbol=FITB?mod=inlineTicker\" target=\"\">FITB\u00a0+1.39%<\/a> allow customers to request a cash advance online or by phone and obtain an instant line of credit, usually up to $500. When the customer&#8217;s next paycheck is deposited, the bank repays itself by deducting the loan balance plus any fees. &#8211; WSJ.com<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Journal reports banks have been barred from offering payday loans since 2000, so they&#8217;ve begun to offer these direct-deposit advances instead.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, federal regulators detailed problems with those loans and <a href=\"http:\/\/dealbook.nytimes.com\/2013\/04\/25\/banks-urged-to-put-limits-on-payday-style-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\">called on banks to limit the practice<\/a>.\u00a0 However, they stopped short of banning it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On Wednesday, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which has been examining the loans, issued a report that found the payday and direct-deposit loans can quickly morph from short-term credit into a seemingly unending burden for low-income customers. \u201cFor too many consumers, payday and deposit advance loans are debt traps,\u201d Richard Cordray, the agency\u2019s director, said in a statement when the report was issued. &#8211; The New York Times<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>During <a title=\"U.S. Bank Shareholder Meeting Brings Protesters to Boise\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2013\/04\/16\/u-s-bank-shareholder-meeting-brings-protestors-to-boise\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Bancorp&#8217;s annual shareholders meeting in Boise last week<\/a>, protesters gathered in part to speak out against the bank&#8217;s payday-style loans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than a dozen states have put caps on payday loan interest rates, limiting and in some cases shutting down the industry in many states.
