The Legislature has actually lost three women from the previous session.\u00a0 Still, the male to female split at Idaho&#8217;s Statehouse is better than the national average.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/legislatures-elections\/legisdata\/legislator-demographic-map.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">National Conference of State Legislatures&#8217; data<\/a> show women make up 24 percent of state lawmakers nationally.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/a\/boisestate.edu\/spreadsheet\/oimg?key=0AiLU6Cs5LWZIdFI3MHA5WVVJZ2JzeTNPXzhRakhreXc&amp;oid=5&amp;zx=8aiurvews6ab\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, does the gender make-up of our elected officials matter?\u00a0 It&#8217;s one of the questions <em>StateImpact<\/em> wanted to explore as we gathered basic demographic information on all of Idaho&#8217;s legislators after November&#8217;s election. <!--more-->The gender breakdown in Idaho&#8217;s total population is nearly 50-50.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/a\/boisestate.edu\/spreadsheet\/oimg?key=0AiLU6Cs5LWZIdFI3MHA5WVVJZ2JzeTNPXzhRakhreXc&amp;oid=6&amp;zx=qzaxrz1bw31l\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rep. <a title=\"Meet State Rep. Maxine Bell\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/maxine-bell\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maxine Bell<\/a> (R-Jerome) just started her 13th term in the Idaho Legislature.\u00a0 While she&#8217;s part of the Republican majority, she&#8217;s also part of a minority group &#8212; women.\u00a0 Bell says she&#8217;s worked with smart, influential women during her tenure at the Capitol.\u00a0 Rep. Bell included Celia Gould, the current director of Idaho&#8217;s Agriculture Department and former legislator; Wendy Jaquet, a Ketchum Democrat who retired from her House seat this year; and Rep. JoAn Wood, a Republican from Rigby who started her 16th term this week, among people she&#8217;s been honored to work with.<\/p>\n<p>Bell doesn&#8217;t necessarily think the Idaho Legislature needs more women elected to office.\u00a0 &#8220;They [women] do bring different perspectives, but it doesn\u2019t have to be equal,&#8221; says Bell.\u00a0 &#8220;Every issue is family, whether it&#8217;s crime, education, health \u2013 there are no female or male issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13554\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Sen. Stennett is one of five women in the Idaho Senate.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cNone of the women I have seen and served with were shrinking violets,&#8221; Bell adds. &#8220;Maybe that makes the difference, you don\u2019t need the numbers if you\u2019re willing to speak up and be active and get yourself out there.\u201d<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Senate Minority Leader Michelle Stennett (D-Ketchum) sees it differently.\u00a0 &#8220;I believe, in all aspects of governing. It should be more balanced,&#8221; says Stennett.\u00a0 &#8220;I think it should be more balanced party wise, ideologically, we should be as diverse as we can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stennett wants to see an Idaho Legislature that is more balanced between men and women.\u00a0 &#8220;Women just think differently, they process differently,&#8221; says Stennett.\u00a0 &#8220;A lot of social justice issues and women\u2019s issues are more dear to their heart, they lend a perspective their male counterparts just won\u2019t see sometimes.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2013 Idaho Legislature is more than a quarter women.
