Work opportunities for Idaho young people have contracted over the last decade, multiple reports indicate.<\/p><\/div>\n

An Annie E. Casey Foundation report on youth unemployment<\/a> released today shows that Idahoans aged 16 to 24 have a slightly higher employment rate than the national average.\u00a0 But that seemingly good news masks significant problems for Idaho young people, with respect to employment.<\/p>\n

The report highlights several things: that it\u2019s become <\/del>harder for young people to find work of any kind, and that without early work experience, it\u2019s more difficult for young people to pursue and build careers later in life.<\/p>\n

It focuses in on a group it calls \u201cdisconnected youth.\u201d\u00a0 The term refers to young people who are both out of school and out of work.\u00a0 It’s in this category that Idaho fares especially badly, says Lauren Necochea, the director of Idaho Kids Count.\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em>“Currently, only three states are worse off than Idaho: Alabama, Louisiana, and West Virginia,” she says.\u00a0 “And this has long-term implications for our economy.\u00a0 If our young adults and youth don\u2019t get a good start, it\u2019s hard for them to have a long-term productive future.”<\/p>\n
