Highlights Growing Poverty In The U.S., In Idaho The Story Is Similar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_13238\"  class=\"wp-caption module image left\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"A child waits with a box of food at a food distribution center. \" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/11\/146592971.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13238\" title=\"Mobile Food Pantry Serves The Needy In Upstate New York\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/11\/146592971-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/11\/146592971-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/11\/146592971-620x413.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Spencer Platt \/ Getty Images<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A child waits with a box of food at a food distribution center.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the holiday season gets underway, the PBS show <em>Frontline<\/em> premiered a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/poor-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\">new documentary<\/a> this week that tells the story of child poverty in America through the eyes of kids.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/poor-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\">Poor Kids<\/a>, and the hour-long program weaves together the similar stories of three families living in poverty, and trying to work their way out of it.<\/p>\n<p>For a family of four, an annual income of $23,050 or less <a href=\"http:\/\/aspe.hhs.gov\/poverty\/12poverty.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">is considered in poverty<\/a>.<em>\u00a0 <\/em>Today&#8217;s median household income is $50,054.\u00a0 In Idaho, the median income is\u00a0$46,423.\u00a0 Last year, 7 percent of Idahoans had incomes that amounted to less than 50 percent of the poverty line, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2012pubs\/acsbr11-01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Census Bureau report<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13233\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Click the chart to enlarge.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/11\/Census-Child-Poverty-Chart.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13233\" title=\"Census Child Poverty Chart\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/11\/Census-Child-Poverty-Chart-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/11\/Census-Child-Poverty-Chart-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/11\/Census-Child-Poverty-Chart-620x328.jpg 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/11\/Census-Child-Poverty-Chart.jpg 1360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">U.S. Census Bureau<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click the chart to enlarge.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As <em>Frontline<\/em> points out, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/social-issues\/poor-kids\/by-the-numbers-childhood-poverty-in-the-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\">the child poverty rate in the U.S.<\/a> has increased over the last few years, with between 13.4 and 16.5 million kids living in poverty.\u00a0 That means about one in five American children live in poverty.<\/p>\n<p>Idaho is following a similar path.\u00a0 According to 2010 U.S. Census data <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2011pubs\/acsbr10-05.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">19 percent<\/a>, or more than 80,000 Idaho kids are living at or below the <a title=\"Measuring Idaho\u2019s Poverty Rate\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/poverty\/\" target=\"_blank\">federal poverty level<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The national average in 2010 was 21.6 percent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2011pubs\/acsbr10-05.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the highest level of child poverty<\/a> since Census started measuring for it in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a list of ways to donate food, clothing and money to local charitable organizations in Idaho:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.idahofoodbank.org\/?page=home\" target=\"_blank\">The Idaho Foodbank\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.idahocommunityaction.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Community Action Partnership of Idaho <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unitedwaytv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">United Way of Treasure Valley\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youthranch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Idaho Youth Ranch<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the holiday season gets underway, the PBS show Frontline premiered a new documentary this week that tells the story of child poverty in America through the eyes of kids.
