C.L. &#8220;Butch&#8221; Otter announced that Hewlett-Packard has won a $180 million contract to provide computers, maintenance and technical support to every high school student and teacher in Idaho, a new consideration joined the fray: local tech jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Any Boisean can tell you that HP has a long history in Idaho.\u00a0 This is the home of the HP LaserJet, an iconic printer, as printers go.\u00a0 By HP&#8217;s own estimates, the company employs as many as 4,000 people in the state.\u00a0 Lately, though, the company&#8217;s news hasn&#8217;t been good.\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>HP CEO Meg Whitman <a href=\"http:\/\/bits.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/03\/h-p-stock-drops-as-meg-whitman-speaks\/\" target=\"_blank\">cut earnings expectations<\/a> early this month, sending the company\u2019s stock price down by nearly 13 percent.\u00a0 In September, the company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/09\/10\/us-hp-layoffs-idUSBRE8890VC20120910\" target=\"_blank\">expanded an earlier layoff announcement<\/a>, and said it would cut as many as 29,000 jobs worldwide over the next two years.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does an eight-year, $180 million deal mean for company like HP?\u00a0 A company that lost nearly $9 billion last quarter?<\/p>\n<p>Von Hansen, an HP vice president and general manager based in Boise, says the contract is significant.<em>\u00a0 <\/em>&#8220;HP is the largest IT company in the world, but we sell to everyone,&#8221; he says.\u00a0 &#8220;Consumers, small businesses, large businesses, state and local governments all over the world, so \u2013 this is a very nice business for Hewlett-Packard.&#8221;\u00a0<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>In other words: these deals add up.<\/p>\n<p>A $180 million contract isn\u2019t going to make or break a company as big as Hewlett-Packard.\u00a0 But this is how HP makes money: by selling here and there and everywhere.\u00a0 And that includes schools.<\/p>\n<p>HP has secured contracts with individual school districts in Washington, Kentucky and North Carolina.\u00a0 Proving laptops for every public high school student in a state is a little more complicated, though.\u00a0 And Hansen believes more states may soon follow Idaho&#8217;s lead.<\/p>\n<p>Howard Pitler, a senior director with Denver-based education consulting company McREL, isn&#8217;t sure how many states are waiting in the wings to implement <a title=\"What Idaho Voters Need To Know About Propositions 1, 2, And 3\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/propositions-1-2-3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Idaho-style statewide school technology initiatives<\/a>.\u00a0 But he says the push for what education technology-types call one-to-one computing is everywhere.\u00a0 That is: more and more schools are trying to achieve a one-to-one student-to-laptop ratio.<\/p>\n<p>That makes schools a big market, and it gives a company like HP a good reason to secure contracts and show success.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What schools are going to be looking for is \u2013\u00a0 &#8216;Can HP come in and not only sell us the equipment but then support that equipment and provide us sufficient guidance to help it move forward?'&#8221; Pitler explains.<\/p>\n<p>HP and the State of Idaho are touting the contract announced this week as one that\u2019s good for local industry and Idaho students.\u00a0 But it\u2019s not clear how many jobs the agreement will support.\u00a0 That\u2019s not information HP likes to give out.\u00a0 What\u2019s more, the contract isn\u2019t a done deal.\u00a0 Idahoans will vote yes or no on the three <a title=\"Props 1, 2, And 3: Voter\u2019s Guide To Idaho\u2019s Controversial Education Laws\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/10\/17\/props-1-2-and-3-voters-guide-to-idahos-controversial-education-laws\/\">Students Come First laws<\/a> on November 6.<\/p>\n<p>To hear the audio version of this story, <a title=\"How Idaho\u2019s $180 Million Education Technology Contract Impacts HP\u2019s Multibillion-Dollar Bottom Line\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/10\/25\/how-idahos-180-million-education-technology-contract-impacts-hps-multibillion-dollar-bottom-line\/\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Idaho\u2019s Students Come First laws are controversial for a lot of reasons.\u00a0 There are the limits the laws impose on teachers\u2019 unions, and the effects on teachers\u2019 job security.
