{"id":1190,"date":"2011-10-27T14:10:17","date_gmt":"2011-10-27T20:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=1190"},"modified":"2011-10-27T14:14:06","modified_gmt":"2011-10-27T20:14:06","slug":"hunger-food-assistance-and-a-stateimpact-endeavor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2011\/10\/27\/hunger-food-assistance-and-a-stateimpact-endeavor\/","title":{"rendered":"Hunger, Food Assistance, and a StateImpact Idaho Endeavor"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1191\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2011\/10\/27\/hunger-food-assistance-and-a-stateimpact-endeavor\/img_0053\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1191\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1191\" title=\"IMG_0053\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2011\/10\/IMG_0053-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2011\/10\/IMG_0053-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2011\/10\/IMG_0053-620x465.jpg 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2011\/10\/IMG_0053-220x165.jpg 220w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2011\/10\/IMG_0053-138x103.jpg 138w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Molly Messick \/ StateImpact Idaho<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry, shelves are emptied by the end of a busy day.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>StateImpact Idaho<\/em> is in the early stages of creating a series about unemployment and underemployment in the state.\u00a0 More specifically, we want\u00a0to find Idahoans who are willing to talk\u00a0with us every month or so about how they&#8217;re coping through economic circumstances that are uncertain, at best.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of making calls to prepare for this series, I was invited to spend some time at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.svdpid.org\/pages\/Home.php\" target=\"_blank\">St. Vincent de Paul<\/a> food pantry here in Boise.\u00a0 It was a busy day there this Wednesday, with nearly 60 families\u00a0picking up carts of free food.\u00a0 At least one woman was a first-time visitor.\u00a0 She came in, looking a little uncertain, and said to the nearest volunteer, &#8220;Somebody said this was a good place to come for food&#8230;&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The demand for food assistance has risen tremendously in recent years.\u00a0 For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idahofoodbank.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Idaho Foodbank<\/a>, which distributes food to pantries, shelters and community kitchens statewide, says its food distribution has gone up by 93 percent since 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The St. Vincent pantry gives food, once a month, to anyone who comes. A number of those I met\u00a0work full-time, but are single parents who can&#8217;t make it on one income.\u00a0 One young woman said she is trying to support three children on $10 an hour.\u00a0 She has no benefits and was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.\u00a0 She, like others I talked to, said she wants people to be more aware of the realities for people living on the fringe.<\/p>\n<p>We here at <em>StateImpact Idaho<\/em> are trying to build those lines of communication.\u00a0 If you have suggestions or want to tell your own story, let us know.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>StateImpact Idaho is in the early stages of creating a series about unemployment and underemployment in the state.\u00a0 More specifically, we want\u00a0to find Idahoans who are willing to talk\u00a0with us every month or so about how they&#8217;re coping through economic circumstances that are uncertain, at best.
