{"id":11798,"date":"2012-10-09T07:40:39","date_gmt":"2012-10-09T13:40:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=11798"},"modified":"2012-10-08T17:30:51","modified_gmt":"2012-10-08T23:30:51","slug":"idaho-creamery-closes-its-doors-after-striking-wal-mart-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/10\/09\/idaho-creamery-closes-its-doors-after-striking-wal-mart-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Idaho Creamery Closes Its Doors After Striking Wal-Mart Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_11829\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Idaho is the nation's third-largest cheese producer, according to the state Department of Agriculture.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/10\/10-8-Dairy-Cows.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11829\" title=\"Dairy Cows\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/10\/10-8-Dairy-Cows-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/10\/10-8-Dairy-Cows-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/files\/2012\/10\/10-8-Dairy-Cows-620x400.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Sandra Mu \/ Getty Images News<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Idaho is the nation&#39;s third-largest cheese producer, according to the state Department of Agriculture.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Days after the Idaho State Department of Agriculture <a title=\"Wal-Mart Orders 40,000 Pounds Of Idaho Cheese\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/10\/03\/wal-mart-orders-40000-pounds-of-idaho-cheese\/\" target=\"_blank\">touted<\/a> that Wal-Mart has begun carrying cheeses from Nelson-Ricks Creamery Company&#8217;s Rexburg plant, the company announced it will end production this month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s happened to the company has been devastating,&#8221; president Reagan Wood said Monday.\u00a0 &#8220;The community and the employees have been impacted, and we did everything we could to not have that happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More than 15 people will lose their jobs because of the closure, Wood confirms, but the company will continue to operate in a different form.\u00a0 It will now get its cheeses from other Idaho manufacturers, and package that cheese at its facility in Salt Lake City, Wood says.\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a common business model, and one the company has moved toward for years, now.\u00a0 There was no other option, Wood says, for a relatively small creamery such as theirs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Running a small business, making the same cheese that the big business makes &#8212; at the small business, your cost is much higher,&#8221; Wood explains.\u00a0 As a result, Nelson-Ricks Creamery Company years ago began buying, packaging and selling cheese from large producers to offset its creamery&#8217;s higher production costs.<\/p>\n<p>The company did other things, too.\u00a0 It tried to diversify its offerings by producing specialty cheeses, but that effort foundered as <a title=\"Defining the Recession\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/topic\/recession\/\" target=\"_blank\">the recession<\/a> made consumers more price-sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Wood says, it was the recession that brought the most formidable challenge.\u00a0 The company&#8217;s longtime lender decided not to renew the creamery&#8217;s line of credit.<del><\/del>\u00a0 That meant the company had to operate on a cash basis to pay workers and purchase milk from Idaho dairies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve experienced some losses in the last three years,&#8221; Wood explains.\u00a0 &#8220;And the banking industry has had some changes to where they&#8217;re not willing to lend money to a 100-year-old company that has little or no debt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As for the company&#8217;s &#8220;Idaho Cheese&#8221; brand cheeses, <a title=\"Wal-Mart Orders 40,000 Pounds Of Idaho Cheese\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/10\/03\/wal-mart-orders-40000-pounds-of-idaho-cheese\/\" target=\"_blank\">promoted by the <strong><\/strong>Agriculture <strong><\/strong>Department&#8217;s Idaho Preferred program<\/a>, those will continue to be available at Wal-Mart stores across southern Idaho. The milk will still come from Idaho cows.
