{"id":11066,"date":"2012-09-24T11:45:15","date_gmt":"2012-09-24T17:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/?p=11066"},"modified":"2012-09-24T22:56:48","modified_gmt":"2012-09-25T04:56:48","slug":"idahos-poverty-rate-continues-its-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/09\/24\/idahos-poverty-rate-continues-its-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Idaho&#8217;s Poverty Rate Continues Its Rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Idaho&#8217;s poverty rate continued its upward climb in 2011, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2012pubs\/acsbr11-01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">rising to 16.5 percent<\/a>.\u00a0 That&#8217;s higher than the national rate of people living in poverty, which grew to 15.9 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Put another way, more than 255,000 Idahoans lived below the federal poverty guideline last year.<\/p>\n<p>The state&#8217;s poverty rate has climbed each year since 2007, when 12.1 percent of state residents lived below the poverty line.\u00a0 While the rate grew by 1.4 percent from 2008 to 2009 and again from 2009 to 2010, it grew by less than a percentage point from 2010 to 2011.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/a\/boisestate.edu\/spreadsheet\/oimg?key=0AtNHLtezDs_XdEpHZVpuR2xlcXo2bXpkZ1N5bXhNWkE&amp;oid=1&amp;zx=a6nghdythakg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"source\">Source: U.S. Census Bureau<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In 2011, the federal poverty guideline was <a href=\"http:\/\/aspe.hhs.gov\/poverty\/11poverty.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">$22,350 for a family of four<\/a>.\u00a0 Last year, 7 percent of Idahoans had incomes that amounted to less than 50 percent of the poverty line, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2012pubs\/acsbr11-01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Census Bureau report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The only neighboring state with a higher percentage of people living below the poverty line is Oregon, with a rate of 17.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Census Bureau released the results of its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/acs\/www\/\" target=\"_blank\">2011 American Community Survey<\/a> last week.\u00a0 We&#8217;re breaking out the findings of that comprehensive survey in sequential <a title=\"Idaho Incomes Fall For Third Year In A\u00a0Row\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/idaho\/2012\/09\/20\/idaho-incomes-fall-for-third-year-in-a-row\/\" target=\"_blank\">posts<\/a> here on the <em>StateImpact<\/em> site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Idaho&#8217;s poverty rate continued its upward climb in 2011, rising to 16.5 percent.\u00a0 That&#8217;s higher than the national rate of people living in poverty, which grew to 15.9 percent.
