There are 180 gun and ammunition makers in Idaho.

The map shows all of the companies licensed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to manufacture firearms or ammunition in the state.  We counted 180 in total, if we don’t include companies on the list that are identically named.

Click each red dot for more information about the company.  Zoom in for a more detailed view.

In 2008, the Idaho Department of Commerce embarked on a campaign to bring so-called recreation technology companies to the state.  The term is intentionally broad — Commerce Director Jeff Sayer says it encompasses “anything under a Cabela’s roof” — but, notably, it includes the gun industry.

Potlatch, Idaho recently began its own rec tech recruitment effort, after Washington-based PNW Arms relocated to the town. We’ll air a broadcast story about Potlatch, PNW Arms and recreation technology tomorrow during Morning Edition on KBSX 91.5.

Some quick information about reading the downloadable data: license type 06 is ammunition manufacturers, license type 07 is firearms manufacturers, and license type 10 is manufacturers of so-called destructive devices.  For more information, see this section of the ATF website.
