The 18-year-old says she did not go to the entire last week of school.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Florida students have already taken all the big tests. They&#8217;ve finished their homework. But some students are still in school.<\/p>\n<p>So what do teachers and students do during the final days of class?<\/p>\n<p>Educators throughout Florida say teaching should be going on every day students are in school.<\/p>\n<p>But students say that isn\u2019t usually what happens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In class I just hang out with friends and just remember all the memories that we had,\u201d says Sophonie Pierre, a 7<sup>th<\/sup> grader at Plantation Middle School in Broward County.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur teachers they just let us enjoy it and talk.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Graduating senior Shamika Jeff says she didn&#8217;t show up for the entire last week of school at Miami Central High School.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was no point in going,\u201d she says. \u201cBecause you had already gotten your exit card and they gave you all your credits, so there was no point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tangela Mitchell is a 9<sup>th<\/sup> grade intensive reading teacher at Miami Central High School.<\/p>\n<div class=\"module pull-quote right\">\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think I would have been able to pass if it wasn&#8217;t for that week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h6>-Anthony Gutierrez, graduating class of 2012<\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<p>She says \u201cThere should be instruction going on up until the last day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she admits some teachers close out their grade books early.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell says teachers have to turn in all their student grades one day after the last day of class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor us to meet the deadline, some of us have closed them out,\u201d she says. \u201cHowever we would not express that to the kids because then they would think \u2018What is the point?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But students are catching on anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Seventh grader Pierre says it\u2019s not fair that she has to go to class if teachers aren\u2019t grading students anymore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re done with final exams,\u201d she says. \u201cSummer should begin already.&#8221;<div class=\"related-content alignright\"><h4 class=\"related-header\">Related<\/h4><div class=\"links\"><h5>Posts<\/h5><ul><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/06\/04\/inside-a-scoring-center-in-the-standardized-testing-industry\/\">Inside a \u2018Scoring Center\u2019 in the Standardized Testing Industry<\/a><\/li><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/05\/04\/floridas-in-school-suspension-policy-keeps-students-out-of-class\/\">In-School Suspension: a Better Alternative or Waste of Time?<\/a><\/li><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/04\/20\/inside-fcat-2-0-what-changes-mean-for-teachers-students\/\">Inside FCAT 2.0: What Changes Mean for Teachers, Students<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"topics\"><h5>Topics<\/h5><p class=\"topic\"><img class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2011\/08\/6022835400_bac207e533_m-60x60.jpg\" height=\"60\" width=\"60\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/topic\/senate-bill-736\/\">How Will Florida Teachers Get\u00a0Paid?<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p>Teachers like Mitchell say closing grade books early doesn\u2019t mean teachers stop teaching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will admit it takes some finagling to keep the kids motivated and instill in them that the importance of education is not just in a grade book,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>She says students can watch educational films or give classroom presentations.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell says part of the problem is that students take the end-of-the-year Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test exams too early.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s so difficult to get them to work beyond that moment, because what is the end of the year exam? It\u2019s the end of the year,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we put things in place that symbolize that then it puts your educators in a place where it\u2019s difficult to keep the kids rallied.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Is it Time to Re-Think the School Calendar?<\/h4>\n<p>Some teachers say maybe school should be more like college.<\/p>\n<p>You take your final exams and you&#8217;re done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve always worked to test as late in the year as possible,\u201d says Jamie Mongiovi with the Florida Department of\u00a0Education.<\/p>\n<p>She says FCAT tests can&#8217;t take place on the very last days of school because the state needs time to score the tests before students go on summer break.<\/p>\n<p>Florida law requires that FCAT results are reported by June 8 of every year.<\/p>\n<p>Candy Olson is chair of the Hillsborough County school board.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8492\"  class=\"wp-caption module image left\" style=\"max-width: 225px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/06\/08\/what-students-teachers-do-during-the-final-days-of-class\/img_0400\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8492\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8492\" title=\"IMG_0400\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_0400-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_0400-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_0400-620x826.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Sarah Gonzalez \/ StateImpact Florida<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anthony Gutierrez says there wasn&#39;t much class instruction during the last week of school, which allowed him to turn in make up work he needed to graduate.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She says it\u2019s good for students to have some time to wind down at the end of the year to sign yearbooks and talk about their summer plans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it\u2019s important for school not to be this grim death march to the end,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re human beings we need to say our farewells. We need to celebrate. But I don&#8217;t think that\u2019s an inappropriate use of school time or of taxpayer dollars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the last week of school was more than a time to celebrate for senior Anthony Gutierrez.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was kind of hectic for me,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Gutierrez was failing math and was close to not graduating.<\/p>\n<p>He used the last week to get extra help from teachers and turn in make-up work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t think I would have been able to pass if it wasn&#8217;t for that week,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida students have already taken all the big tests.
