{"id":8396,"date":"2012-06-06T12:40:26","date_gmt":"2012-06-06T16:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/?p=8396"},"modified":"2012-06-06T12:40:31","modified_gmt":"2012-06-06T16:40:31","slug":"how-a-florida-program-is-fighting-learning-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/06\/06\/how-a-florida-program-is-fighting-learning-loss\/","title":{"rendered":"How A Florida Program Is Fighting Learning Loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_8397\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 240px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/06\/06\/how-a-florida-program-is-fighting-learning-loss\/afterschool\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8397\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8397\" title=\"afterschool\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/06\/afterschool.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Oxford Active\/flickr<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"> <\/p><\/div>\n<p>We\u2019ve heard about how kids tend to forget a lot of what they learn in school when they\u2019re away from the classroom for a few months.<\/p>\n<p>But a Florida program is making sure learning doesn&#8217;t stop just because kids are out of class.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\" http:\/\/www.expandinglearning.org\/docs\/davis_lingo_woodruff.pdf\">new report shows how afterschool and summer programs in Florida can be effective<\/a> at improving student success.<\/p>\n<p>The report focuses on the hundreds of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/curriculum\/21century\/\"> 21st Century Community Learning Centers in Florida<\/a>.\u00a0 These centers are part of the federal \u201cNo Child Left Behind\u201d Act. <a href=\"http:\/\/florida21stcclc.education.ufl.edu\/\">They provide expanded learning opportunities for children<\/a> that attend high poverty and low performing schools.<\/p>\n<p>The activities are designed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/programs\/21stcclc\/index.html\">help students meet or exceed academic standards<\/a> in reading, math and other subjects.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s 21st Century Community Learning Centers use these four elements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fun \u2013 students should be interested and enjoy the experience.<\/li>\n<li>Hands on \u2013 students should physically participate in activities.<\/li>\n<li>Engaged learning \u2013 students should be mentally engaged in activities.<\/li>\n<li>Tie-in \u2013 connecting regular classroom learning with afterschool activities makes them more memorable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Florida\u2019s program serves 80,000 students and their families.\u00a0 Data from Learning Points Associates, a national research firm, shows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>78 percent of 21st Century Community Learning Center students statewide either maintained or showed growth in math. 79 percent maintained or showed growth in reading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>75 percent of Florida students did a better job of turning in homework on time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>80 percent of students demonstrated an increase in class participation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe outcomes we have seen for our students are impressive, and the time we utilized after the school day was the key to our success,\u201d\u00a0said Joe Davis, Chief Operating Officer of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myfan.org\/ \">Florida Afterschool Network<\/a> and one of the report\u2019s authors. \u201cWe wanted to share what we\u2019ve learned so that more communities \u2013 both in Florida and throughout the country \u2013 could reap the benefits of effective afterschool programs and strong school-community partnerships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report, released by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expandinglearning.org\/\">Expanded Learning and Afterschool Project<\/a>, concludes that afterschool time can be a valuable tool in educating children.
