{"id":7235,"date":"2012-05-08T11:45:43","date_gmt":"2012-05-08T15:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/?p=7235"},"modified":"2012-05-08T11:13:40","modified_gmt":"2012-05-08T15:13:40","slug":"after-further-review-umass-education-students-object-to-new-evaluation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/05\/08\/after-further-review-umass-education-students-object-to-new-evaluation\/","title":{"rendered":"After Further Review, UMass Education Students Object To New Evaluation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_7247\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/05\/08\/after-further-review-umass-education-students-object-to-new-evaluation\/videocamera\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7247\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7247\" title=\"VideoCamera\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/05\/VideoCamera-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/05\/VideoCamera-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/05\/VideoCamera.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">AndyRobertsPhotos \/ Flickr<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Teacher candidates at the University of Massachusetts are objecting to a video-based evaluation program.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Teachers-in-training at the University of Massachusetts are leading a protest against a pilot national teacher evaluation program being developed by testing giant Pearson and Stanford University, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/05\/07\/education\/new-procedure-for-teaching-license-draws-protest.html?pagewanted=1&amp;_r=3&amp;src=rechp\">the <em>New York Times<\/em> reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The students and their instructor are worried that turning over two 10-minute videos and a 40-page test to a faceless evaluator will not produce a useful assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly all of the 68 middle and high school teaching candidates have declined to participate.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/05\/07\/education\/new-procedure-for-teaching-license-draws-protest.html?pagewanted=1&amp;_r=3&amp;src=rechp\">the story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is something complex and we don\u2019t like seeing it taken out of human hands,\u201d said <a title=\"Web site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.umass.edu\/education\/academics\/tecs\/madeloni.shtml\">Barbara Madeloni<\/a>, who runs the university\u2019s high school teacher training program. \u201cWe are putting a stick in the gears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily Waites, 25, who is getting a master\u2019s degree to teach biology, found that the process of reducing 270 minutes of recorded classroom teaching to 20 minutes of video was demeaning and frustrating, made worse because she had never edited video before. \u201cI don\u2019t think it showed in any way who I am as a teacher,\u201d she said. \u201cIt felt so stilted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Web site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scoretpa.pearson.com\/\">Pearson advertises<\/a> that it is paying scorers $75 per assessment, with work \u201cavailable seven days a week\u201d for current or retired licensed teachers or administrators. This makes Amy Lanham wonder how thorough the grading will be. \u201cI don\u2019t think you can have a genuine reflective process from a calibrated scorer,\u201d said Ms. Lanham, 28, who plans to teach English.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Six states have agreed to use the new evaluation system. Next year, teaching candidates in Washington state will have to pass the assessment to earn their license.<\/p>\n<p>Florida is implementing a <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/02\/16\/inside-the-mathematical-equation-for-teacher-merit-pay\/\">teacher evaluation which uses a statistical model <\/a>to determine what effect a teacher had on a student&#8217;s learning.<\/p>\n<p>Pearson has a hand in Florida teacher evaluations, because those scores are based in part on a student&#8217;s performance on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Pearson has the contract to design and grade the test.<\/p>\n<p>The Massachusetts education students are also raising privacy concerns about students who might appear in the videos.
