Rick Scott signed the bill creating Florida Polytechnic University into law last month.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gov. Rick Scott says his decision to approve Florida Polytechnic University &#8220;makes sense.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/wusf.drupal.publicbroadcasting.net\/post\/gov-scott-five-reasons-florida-polytechnic-makes-sense\">interview with WUSF radio<\/a>, Scott provides his defense:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1. It focuses state resources \u201cwhere the jobs are right now\u201d &#8211;\u00a0 STEM (science, technology, engineering and math.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u201cIt will pay off \u201d by producing more STEM graduates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u201cIt\u2019s the exact same funding that we were doing already.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. The Board of Governors has already made this decision.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u201cSometimes there\u2019s a benefit from starting something from scratch &#8230; sometimes when you do that in business, you end up with a better result.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more-->Scott was short on specifics about how the state would measure the university&#8217;s performance, and admits that Florida could have bolstered STEM programs at existing universities instead.<\/p>\n<p>But no one was proposing that, Scott says.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to the full interview with Scott on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wusf.usf.edu\/news\/program\/florida_matters\">Florida Matters tonight at 6:30<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
