Washington High School, students likes Danna Contreras,  took turns taking the online FCAT reading test because there aren&#39;t enough computers for sophomores to take the test at the same time.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Danna Contreras doesn\u2019t like the new FCAT.<\/p>\n<p>The sophomore at Booker T. Washington High School in Miami emigrated from Colombia three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>She wears thick, pink-rimmed glasses and she squints a lot. She says the new computerized version is harder to take.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I am better with paper, not on the computer because sometimes my eyes hurt,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not the only reason she&#8217;s worried about her reading score.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have difficulty speaking English and the vocabulary is really hard,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Students are taking a new, harder version of the FCAT this year, called FCAT 2.0.<\/p>\n<p>The test is supposed to be harder to pass and the stakes are higher than ever.<\/p>\n\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From now on, FCAT results will help determine whether teachers keep their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Contreras is an honors student. But she says her performance in class doesn\u2019t matter anymore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you can be an A student the whole year, but if you don\u2019t pass the FCAT they make you take easy classes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>FCAT results determine whether students go into remedial courses, called \u201cintensives,\u201d or honors classes.<\/p>\n<p>She says it seems like flawed logic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo everybody they give the same test. They said it was just boring.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sharon Koon with the Florida Department of Education says the FCAT 2.0 requires students to remember more material they learned in earlier grades.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if the math concepts mean, median and mode are taught in 6th grade, Koon says, \u201cWe would expect that students are able to solve problems related to those concepts in 7th grade without formulas being given.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FCAT was first introduced in 1997 to academic standards created in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Florida has just updated its standards &#8212; now called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/bii\/curriculum\/sss\/\">Next Generation Sunshine State Standards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd every time you adopt new standards you do have to change your assessments,\u201d Koon said.<\/p>\n<p>The contractor Pearson is being paid $254 million over four years to develop and administer the new\u00a0FCAT.<\/p>\n<p>The new test isn\u2019t just important to students. Starting now, FCAT results will help determine whether teachers keep their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Smith is a French teacher at Hialeah High School in Miami-Dade County.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty percent of her evaluation will be based on the school\u2019s FCAT score in reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I&#8217;m a French teacher, not an English teacher or a reading teacher,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Smith says most teachers will have half their score <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/02\/16\/inside-the-mathematical-equation-for-teacher-merit-pay\/\">come from FCAT subjects they have no influence over<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"related-content alignright\"><h4 class=\"related-header\">Related<\/h4><div class=\"links\"><h5>Posts<\/h5><ul><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/02\/16\/inside-the-mathematical-equation-for-teacher-merit-pay\/\">Inside the Mathematical Equation for Teacher Merit Pay<\/a><\/li><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/04\/17\/science-blogger-finds-problems-with-fcat-questions\/\">Science Blogger Finds Problems With FCAT Questions<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"topics\"><h5>Topics<\/h5><p class=\"topic\"><img class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2011\/08\/6022835400_bac207e533_m-60x60.jpg\" height=\"60\" width=\"60\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/topic\/senate-bill-736\/\">How Will Florida Teachers Get\u00a0Paid?<\/a><\/p><p class=\"topic\"><img class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2011\/07\/fcat-60x60.jpg\" height=\"60\" width=\"60\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/topic\/fcat\/\">What Does The FCAT Tell us About Your School?<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/div>\u00a0In many cases, teachers are being evaluated on students they don\u2019t teach.<\/p>\n<p>Students who pass the FCAT as sophomores don\u2019t have to take the exam anymore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if you only teach 11<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0graders or 12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0graders, your evaluation is based on the reading scores on the ninth and tenth graders,\u201d Smith said, \u201cstudents who are not even your students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If reading scores are low for two out of three years new teachers will be brought in.<\/p>\n<p>Smith says <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/02\/17\/why-poverty-is-not-included-in-the-mathematical-equation-for-teacher-merit-pay\/\">schools in low income communities, like hers, will get penalized<\/a> for low grades teachers can&#8217;t always control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool is not always the first priority and in a lot of cases it\u2019s not always the parent\u2019s priority either,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes, they\u2019re so busy trying to find a job or working 2 or 3 jobs to keep the lights on and unfortunately that trumps homework.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By 2015 school reading scores will also help determine how much teachers get paid.<\/p>\n<p>Student Dana Contreras says that puts too much pressure on students.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6570\"  class=\"wp-caption module image left\" style=\"max-width: 225px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/04\/20\/inside-fcat-2-0-what-changes-mean-for-teachers-students\/img_0985\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6570\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6570\" title=\"IMG_0985\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/04\/IMG_0985-e1334940666330-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/04\/IMG_0985-e1334940666330-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/04\/IMG_0985-e1334940666330-620x826.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Sarah Gonzalez \/ StateImpact Florida<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jennifer Smith is a French teacher who will be evaluated based on her school&#39;s FCAT results in reading.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens if that day you broke up with a boyfriend and you want to cry and you don&#8217;t want to see the test,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ezekiel Harris, a sixth grader student at Jose de Diego Middle School inMiamiis already feeling the pressure from his school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey say that the test is more important than your school work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said his results will tell him if he\u2019ll get into \u201cthe smart classes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s even been a small movement by parents who are pulling their children out of school during FCAT testing.<\/p>\n<p>Linda Kobert is a mom of a freshman in Orlando. She says pulling her child out of testing is \u201csomething we\u2019re considering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s become the measure of whether a child will advance a grade, graduate high school and I have issues with what we\u2019re doing to teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor\u2019s note: This story has been updated to correct the spelling of Colombia.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Danna Contreras doesn\u2019t like the new FCAT.
