The New Jersey teen was a family friend of Port Richey Rep. John Legg. Legg was so moved by the tragedy <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/04\/04\/teens-suicide-has-florida-lawmaker-seeking-action-for-victims-of-bullying\/\">he wrote a letter<\/a> to Florida Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson encouraging aggressive action against such behavior. \u201cNo child should feel this threatened anywhere,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Readers were particularly interested in John O\u2019Connor\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/04\/02\/school-bullying-may-not-be-as-big-a-problem-as-you-think\/\">story<\/a> about whether bullying is really an epidemic.\u00a0<!--more--> An essay written for the Wall Street Journal suggests it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Reader <strong>Angel<\/strong> said the problem is real:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>It is not over hyped, especially in 19 states that allow corporal punishment in schools.\u00a0 In my state of Georgia, over 21,000 instances of corporal punishment was recorded.\u00a0 I say its the schools\/educators who are the bully.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Reader <strong>sds<\/strong> also took issue with the idea that bullying isn\u2019t such a big concern:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>If you think this isn&#8217;t a problem you are deluding yourself!!\u00a0 It is NOT a small issue, it continues and cannot be tolerated or ignored!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jim Corcoran<\/strong> offered another perspective:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Forget tougher punishments and hiring more police for schools. The solution to crime and violence is in your lunchroom.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/environment\/25122\/?comments=view&amp;cID=35161&amp;pID=34156\">link to a story<\/a> about Appleton Central Alternative, where staffers say the negative behavior exhibited by students changed for the better when the school&#8217;s menu options changed. Vending machines were replaced by water coolers, and salads and fruits took the place of hamburgers and fries in the cafeteria.
