Rick Scott to veto the bill. Hecht said the bill will make it more difficult for students to pay for and complete school. Machen has <a href=\"http:\/\/chalkboard.blogs.gainesville.com\/2012\/03\/machen-uf-would-delay-higher-tuition-create-four-year-flat-rate\/\">outlined a plan<\/a> that would set a flat-rate tuition that would increase the cost to students, but lock in the price for four years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hoping against hope that that becomes a long-term reality for us,\u201d Machen told <em>The Alligator<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alligator.org\/news\/campus\/article_d3dcb6e8-6f26-11e1-aae8-001871e3ce6c.html\">newspaper<\/a> of the bill allowing tuition increases. \u201cThis budget situation is the bleakest in the eight years that I\u2019ve been here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The university estimates raising tuition would yield an additional $25 million to $30 million.<\/p>\n<p>But that could mean fewer students<\/p>\n<p>While Hecht and Gators College Access Network are trying to kill the proposal, he doesn&#8217;t fault Machen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I truly believe he has the best interests of students in mind,&#8221; Hecht said. &#8220;He has to answer the question &#8216;How am I going to fill that (budget) gap?'&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>University of Florida senior Andrew Hecht understands the bind in which university president Bernie Machen finds himself.
