The teacher tells students the dimensions for the paddle and hands them a belt sander.<\/p>\n<p>The paddle is light in weight. It&#8217;s about 6 ounces, 16 inches long, 5 inches wide, and half an inch thick and made of ash wood. Dixson says the school decided that was a good size.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no regulatory agency that I&#8217;m aware of,&#8221; Dixson said. &#8220;But you wouldn&#8217;t want a\u00a0heavy oak type [of wood], that would not be a good thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Florida is one of 19 states that allows school employees to\u00a0use physical force to discipline\u00a0students in school, according to the Center for Effective Discipline. The issue has gained national attention and a bill has been introduced in the U.S. Congress to ban the practice.<\/p>\n<p>In Florida, <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/03\/12\/why-florida-schools-want-the-right-to-paddle-misbehaving-students\/\">the use of corporal punishment has sparked lawsuits<\/a>. But many communities defend the use of corporal punishment,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/03\/12\/why-florida-schools-want-the-right-to-paddle-misbehaving-students\/\">and the tradition has stuck<\/a> in rural parts of north Florida and the Everglades.<\/p>\n<div class=\"related-content alignleft\"><h4 class=\"related-header\">Related<\/h4><div class=\"links\"><h5>Posts<\/h5><ul><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/03\/13\/why-florida-schools-can-paddle-students-against-parents-wishes\/\">Why Florida Schools Can Paddle Students Against Parents\u2019 Wishes<\/a><\/li><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/03\/12\/why-florida-schools-want-the-right-to-paddle-misbehaving-students\/\">Why Florida Schools Want the Right to Paddle Misbehaving Students<\/a><\/li><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/maps\/corporal-punishment-in-florida-schools\/\">Mapping Corporal Punishment in Florida Schools<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"topics\"><h5>Topics<\/h5><p class=\"topic\"><img class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/03\/CP-04-Eddie-Dixson-60x60.jpg\" height=\"60\" width=\"60\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/topic\/school-corporal-punishment\/\">What Does the Law Say About School Corporal Punishment?<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The state defines corporal punishment as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/statutes\/index.cfm?mode=View%20Statutes&amp;SubMenu=1&amp;App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;Search_String=1003.01&amp;URL=1000-1099\/1003\/Sections\/1003.01.html\">&#8220;moderate use of physical force or physical contact by a teacher or principal<\/a> as may be necessary to maintain discipline or to enforce school rule.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But there is no language in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/statutes\/index.cfm?mode=View%20Statutes&amp;SubMenu=1&amp;App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;Search_String=1003.32&amp;URL=1000-1099\/1003\/Sections\/1003.32.html\">the statue<\/a> that says where on the body\u00a0students\u00a0can be hit, or with which instruments, if any.<\/p>\n<p>Historically schools have used a paddle to spank students on their rear-end.<\/p>\n<p>Dixson has been principal at Holmes County High School for four years and he has only owned one paddle.<\/p>\n<p>He says students rarely make the paddles &#8220;because they last.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Which may make wood the better choice for a school paddle.<\/p>\n<p>(You can see an interactive map of Florida school districts with corporal punishment policies <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/maps\/corporal-punishment-in-florida-schools\/\">here<\/a>).<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>When the Paddle Breaks<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In Madison, Fla., members of the community made the paddles out of plexiglass for\u00a0Madison\u00a0County Central elementary and middle school.<\/p>\n<p>And because its plexiglass Rod Williams, the Dean of Students, says &#8220;it&#8217;s almost impossible to hit too hard with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The school\u00a0district\u00a0decided schools can only give students a maximum of three licks with a paddle.<\/p>\n<p>Williams said he used to make the paddles when he was in wood shop class in high school.
