Myers. She told the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-press.com\/\">Fort Myers News-Press<\/a> <\/em>the school and the teachers could be better. Her daughter took it a step further, saying she likes the school, \u201cbut they could teach the subjects better.\u201d\u00a0<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Most districts offer some sort of school choice program, and many are mulling how to make those programs work for more kids. The parent trigger bill hasn\u2019t been filed with the Florida Legislature yet, but the kind of reform it would bring has long been part of <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.orlandosentinel.com\/2010-11-13\/news\/os-scott-legislature-education-20101113_1_charter-schools-education-reform-traditional-schools\">Gov. Scott\u2019s agenda<\/a>. <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Shortly after he took office, Scott named a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentsfirst.org\/pages\/about-michelle-rhee\">Michelle Rhee<\/a> as his education advisor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/2011\/01\/07\/2004447\/pupils-come-first-scott-says.html\">who is in step<\/a> with his goal of giving parents more control over schools. Rhee spent three years as chancellor of the public school system in Washington, DC. \u00a0She made headlines for closing schools and firing hundreds of teachers and administrators. She resigned in the fall of 2010 and founded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentsfirst.org\/#\">StudentsFirst<\/a>, whose mission is \u201cto build a national movement to defend the interests of children in public education and pursue transformative reform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the movement\u2019s priorities is to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentsfirst.org\/policy-agenda\/entry\/empower-parents-with-useful-data\">empower parents<\/a> \u201cto trigger the turnaround of a failing school\u2026.A true students-first system would give parents power to choose among several quality <a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentsfirst.org\/pages\/state-action\/florida\">school options<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How do teachers feel about the \u201cparent trigger\u201d proposal? After all, there\u2019s been plenty of talk about how to deal with underperforming teachers. Ileane Flores, a teacher at Riverdale High School in Ft. Myers, told the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-press.com\/article\/20111202\/NEWS0104\/312020009\/1006\/RSS0104\">Fort Myers News-Press<\/a>,<\/em> \u201cI think there should be a bill for teachers to help eliminate underperforming parents&#8230;I think parents have a lot of control over their children\u2019s education, but they\u2019d just rather blame the institution than take steps with their own child to improve their education.\u201d<\/p>\n<h1><em><\/em><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/h1>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve heard about Governor Rick Scott\u2019s proposed \u201cparent trigger law,\u201d which would give parents the power to shut down low performing schools and transform them into charter schools.\u00a0 Now we\u2019re hearing from some of the people who would be impacted by the change.
