Math lessons are carefully designed to match Florida&#8217;s new Common Core-based standards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Florida just completed the first year of one of the biggest experiments in U.S. education.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time this year, <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/tag\/common-core\/\">every grade in every public school used new math and language arts standards that outline what students should know each year<\/a>. The goal to have is high school graduates who are ready for college-level classes or the full-time work force.<\/p>\n<p>School district and state leaders generally support the switch. Teacher and parent opinions differ about whether the new standards are an improvement.<\/p>\n<p>But nearly everyone agrees the switch has been imperfect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been not necessarily a smooth transition,&#8221; said Miami-Dade schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.<\/p>\n\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s standards are based on Common Core, which has been fully adopted by 42 states and the District of Columbia. The new online test was a mess this year. And he says many school districts were confused at first about what the standards required.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there [were] some false starts with the implementation of Common Core,&#8221; he said, &#8220;but I think across the state of Florida there is an embracing of the need for higher level standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senate Education committee chairman John Legg agreed with Carvalho&#8217;s assessment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very successful in some areas and a complete disaster in other areas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A big disaster was the<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2015\/03\/09\/five-questions-about-floridas-testing-problems\/\"> trouble students had logging into the state\u2019s new test<\/a>. Software updates by test contractor American Institutes for Research created most of those problems. Legg calls that unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>But he says the tougher standards are getting a reaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think your teachers are seeing our students are pushing themselves,&#8221; said Legg, who also runs a Pasco County charter school. &#8220;They\u2019re expanding their lessons, how they\u2019re learning, but the assessment side of it had significant year one issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can see how Florida\u2019s new standards are influencing math lessons in Yaliesperanza Salazar\u2019s fifth grade classroom at Miami\u2019s Frances S. Tucker Elementary.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s the emphasis on working in smaller groups \u2013 in this case to add up how many cakes, chocolate bars and other treats were eaten.<\/p>\n<p>Salazar also asked her students to dissect and critique the work of other students. She wanted them to figure out what they got right and wrong \u2013 and why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what they did is they found the total amount of?&#8221; Salazar asked a group of students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cake,&#8221; they reply.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So guess what they did?&#8221; she asked. &#8220;How many people ate one-eighth?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Three,&#8221; the students holler.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You see what they did in here?&#8221; Salazar asks, referencing a chart the previous group of students drew. &#8220;OK? Paying attention?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is the idealized version of the Common Core classroom: The teacher turning students loose on a lesson, everyone working together on multiple solutions, and students teaching each other.<\/p>\n<p>But the reality is messier.<\/p>\n<p>Palm Beach County middle school math teacher Vince Rogers said his first year confirmed one of the complaints about Common Core goals: They\u2019re just too hard.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote.png\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-23719\" alt=\"6-22 CommonCorePullQuote\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote-300x300.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote-620x620.png 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote-32x32.png 32w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote-64x64.png 64w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote-96x96.png 96w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote-128x128.png 128w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote-60x60.png 60w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/06\/6-22-CommonCorePullQuote.png 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWe\u2019re teaching sixth grade math skills like box and whisker plots and interquartile range,&#8221; he said of new additions to math lessons this year. &#8220;The reality is that most people will never use that in their real life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Common Core is supposed to be more of a challenge. Fewer students are expected to meet goals on state tests. Students will have to be able to explain \u2013 and defend\u00a0\u2013\u00a0their work.<\/p>\n<p>But the creators of Common Core\u00a0\u2013\u00a0groups like the National Governor\u2019s Association with help from teachers and educators across the country\u00a0\u2013\u00a0say the standards are better because they\u2019re more streamlined. Many states piled on concepts in their former standards so that teachers had to rush through lessons to get everything covered.<\/p>\n<p>But Rogers says he feels more rushed with Florida\u2019s new standards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I teach a new thing every day,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And it\u2019s sad, but we almost expect kids have to get it\u2026 there\u2019s just no time to really stick with something for any length of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kathy Pham has heard those complaints from math teachers. She\u2019s a teacher in Miami-Dade County who helps train teachers in the language arts standards. Critics worried Common Core might restrict teachers. But Pham says Common Core allows for less scripted lessons and gives more freedom to teachers in classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does absolutely give them more flexibility,&#8221; she said, &#8220;and it encourages teachers to do fewer \u2013 again in language arts, anyway \u2013 fewer pieces of text, but in much more depth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Big changes in classrooms take some time to get used she says. But Pham calls the new standards an improvement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s still a lot of growing to be done,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I think that teachers are doing the best that they can incorporating it. And I know a lot of teachers have said to me, \u2018Well, we\u2019ll be a lot better next year.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the ultimate judges? What do students think of all these changes?<\/p>\n<p>Miami fifth grader Natasha Benzadon is not a fan of the way Common Core has changed her math lessons. Teachers are using new techniques to help students visualize and grasp the concepts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, they\u2019re teaching you with models that <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2015\/02\/16\/why-elementary-math-lessons-are-changing-in-florida-schools\/\">I really don\u2019t understand the lesson<\/a>,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>That means drawing number lines or multiplying using a matrix instead of the traditional solution method &#8212; carrying ones, tens, hundreds long hand to work out the answer.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23277\"  class=\"wp-caption module image left\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Jessica Knopf and her daughter, Natasha, after a homework session.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/02\/2-16KnopfNatasha.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23277\" alt=\"Jessica Knopf and her daughter, Natasha, after a homework session.\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/02\/2-16KnopfNatasha-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/02\/2-16KnopfNatasha-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/02\/2-16KnopfNatasha-620x413.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">John O&#39;Connor \/ StateImpact Florida<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Natasha Benzadon and her mom, Jessica Knopf, after a math homework session.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s why when I come home I ask for my mom\u2019s method,\u201d Benzadon said.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Miami fifth-grader Owen Robson says \u201ctext evidence\u201d was a big deal in his classes. That\u2019s when students have to support their ideas and writing with facts from what they\u2019re reading.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an emphasis in Common Core.<\/p>\n<p>But if Common Core is supposed to be more of a challenge, Robson says <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2015\/03\/02\/ready-or-not-students-new-florida-exam-is-here\/\">the new test<\/a> didn\u2019t seem much harder.<\/p>\n<p>He was nervous taking the exam and he\u2019s still waiting on his score. But he says he and many of his friends finished the math and language arts exams with plenty of time to spare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was about the same,&#8221; Robson said. &#8220;There were about the same questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John O&#8217;Connor \/ StateImpact Florida Frances S.
